CONCORD — For the third year in a row, the Cabarrus College of Health Sciences Simulation Center and Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast worked together to provide standardized patients for a one-day, hands-on ultrasound course.

The course, which is sponsored by Carolinas HealthCare’s emergency medicine and critical care departments, is a course for physicians who perform ultrasounds at the bedside. Ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging technology that is used across medicine for evaluation and treatment of multiple medical conditions.

Since the course is “hands-on,” six Cabarrus College students served as standardized patients during the ultrasound simulation. Physicians used ultrasound equipment to view the student’s heart, lungs, blood vessels and abdominal cavity. This collaboration not only meets the needs of the physicians but provides the students a reinforcement of their anatomy and physiology training.

Cabarrus College officials say they are always eager to provide students with the opportunity for interdisciplinary and interprofessional education that reinforces to students the need for collaboration among health care providers and disciplines to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.
