Area Sports Briefs: Otto scores TD in first St. Andrews win

QB Kacey Otto (West Rowan) scored his first college touchdown and helped St. Andrews beat Cincinnati Christian, 48-25, for the first win for the new program.

St. Andrews was playing its first home game.

Otto had a 9-yard scoring run and threw for a 2-point conversion. He was 2-for-2 passing for 53 yards.

Otto redshirted last season, along with the rest of the school’s freshman class.

Elon true freshman Kortez Weeks (West Rowan) had eight catches for 77 yards in Saturday’s  upset win at Furman.

Weeks had a 33-yard reception. He has 10 catches for 99 yards for the season.

Hampton has moved former West Rowan defensive lineman Derrick Moreland to offense. He started at guard in Saturday’s win against Delaware State. K.J. Wilson (West Rowan) also action on the offensive line for the Pirates. Hampton hosts Livingstone this week.

Myquon Stout (Carson) started at nose tackle for Appalachian State in Saturday’s romp against Savannah State.

Sophomore defensive lineman Wesley Jefferies (North Rowan) is a factor at Feather River College in California. He had a tackle for loss and a half-sack in a win on Saturday.

Alexis Archie (North Rowan) is the backup QB for Feather River. He had 10 rushing yards and a pass completion on Saturday.

At Ventura College in California, Naquis Caldwell (East Rowan) has two receptions for 16 yards after two games.

True freshman Wesley Porter (East Rowan) made seven tackles, one for loss, for Sewanee in a setback vs. Washington & Lee on Saturday.

Porter has 20 tackles in Sewanee’s first two games.

Juwan Houston (West Rowan) had his first reception of the season for 10  yards as Guilford clobbered Methodist on Saturday.

Linebacker Kyrell Williamson (A.L. Brown) had four tackles and a 40-yard fumble return for Winston-Salem State in Saturday’s loss to Bowie State.

Darius Jackson (Salisbury) had two tackles for N.C. Wesleyan in Saturday’s loss to Shenandoah, and D.J. Alexander (Salisbury) had one tackle.

Kaleb Spry (A.L. Brown) is starting at center for Western Carolina.

Sandon McCoy (A.L. Brown got his first carries for Army in the opening win against Furman and had 16 carries on four attempts.

Jayln Cagle (A.L. Brown) had four carries for 26 yards in Gardner-Webb’s season-opening loss to N.C. A&T.

N.C. A&T’s Brandon Parker (A.L. Brown) was honored as co-offensive lineman of the week by the MEAC.

NFL

Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) had three tackles, including a sack, for Pittsburgh in Sunday’s win against Cleveland.

Chris Smith (West Rowan) had a tackle for loss for Cincinnati in Sunday’s loss to Baltimore.

College volleyball

Makala Lytton (North Rowan) had nine digs and two aces as Winston-Salem State swept Catawba on Saturday.

Morgan Hester (Carson) had seven assists and five digs for the Indians.

Livingstone lost to Johnson & Wales, 3-2, on Saturday at New Trent Gym. Shantell Billups had 13 kills for the Blue Bears. Kierra Acuff had 17 digs.

Michaela White (Carson) had 34 assists and 15 digs in UNC Wilmington’s 3-2 loss to N.C. State on Saturday.

College soccer

Landon Goodman (Salisbury) scored the decisive goal in Anderson’s 2-1 win against North Georgia.

College cross country

Matthew Martin and Jonathan Martin (Carson) helped UNC Pembroke finish second in the Queens Twilight on Saturday.

Matthew ran 15:35, while Jonathan ran 15:36 in the 5K event. They were the No. 3 and No. 4 runners for UNCP.

In the Western Carolina Festival, Jordan Bostian (West Rowan) led WCU runners in 15:53.30 and placed seventh.

Prep cross country

Junior Thomas Waldo ran 17:44 to lead West Rowan to a sixth-place finish at the Friday Night Lights race in Kernersville.

South Rowan freshman Noah Julian placed 15th in 17:23.

Keegan Dillon led Salisbury runners in 17:48.

South Rowan’s girls were strong at Kernersville, with Madison Lowery (10th in 20:45) leading the way. Madison Henry and Madison McGuire were in the top 55 runners and helped South place 10th.

Ellen Simons led Salisbury runners, while freshman Megyn Spicer led West Rowan.

Local golf

MarkMarlowe made a hole-in-one at McCanless on Friday.

He aced the 215-yard No. 6 hole with a 4-iron.

It was the first ace of his career.  Jacob Durham, Adam Horton, Derek Lipe, and Rusty Morrison witnessed the shot.

Bev Cobb had a recent hole-in-one on No. 17 at the Country Club of Salisbury.

She aced the 122-yard hole with a driver. Ty Cobb   witnessed the feat.

Sacred Heart soccer

Sacred Heart’s soccer team battled to a 3-all tie with St. Pius X.  Ben Childress scored two goals for the Dolphins, while John David Bonilla had one.

Sacred Heart soccer won at Concordia Lutheran, 5-0.

  Colin Donaldson had a hat trick, and Childress scored twice.

The Dolphins were bolstered by Joe Bohland, Cooper Fleeman and Soyer Cornelison.

Jalon Walker recorded the shutout in goal for the Dolphins (2-0-2).
