SALISBURY — Rowan County native Jan Corriher-Smith has joined Catawba College as director of continuing education.

In this new position in Catawba’s Ketner School of Business, Corriher-Smith will work with faculty, local businesses and regional employers to develop and offer short-term classes and seminars that allow employees in a variety of fields to obtain or maintain certifications in areas such as health care, accounting, law and education.

“We are delighted to welcome someone of Jan’s experience to Catawba College. Her familiarity with continuing education and the certification needs of our regional work force will help her hit the ground running,” said Ketner School of Business Dean Jay Abraham. “Adding this service for our community and its workforce certification has been one of my goals for the business school. It’s rewarding to see this goal move to fruition.”

Corriher-Smith has been director of customized training and development at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College for the past 14 years. She was responsible for working with business and industry and the general public to coordinate occupational and certification training in Rowan and Cabarrus counties.

She also has served as a part-time instructor in RCCC’s Business and Marketing Department.

Corriher-Smith holds degrees from Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer — a bachelor of science in business administration and a master’s degree in business administration.

She is married to Tim Smith, and they are the parents of four children.

Catawba’s continuing education program will offer a notary certification class in November. Registration is available online at www.catawba.edu/ceu.

Planned program offerings for January include notary, e-notary, real estate CE and medical code training.
