KANNAPOLIS — Three Kannapolis Fire Department staff members have been promoted to new positions.

“I am pleased to have highly qualified individuals such as these personnel who continue to further their leadership within Kannapolis Fire Department,” said Chief Ernie Hiers. “It will be a privilege to work with them in their new areas.”

Senior Capt. Greg Summitt was promoted to training manager, under the direction of Technical Services Division Chief Kirk Beard.

Summitt started as a junior volunteer when he was 16 years old and has 16 years of fire service, nine of which are full-time service with the Kannapolis Fire Department. He is a deputy chief of the Cleveland Community Fire Department. He is a past recipient of both the Firefighter and Officer of the Year awards with the Kannapolis Fire Department.

Senior Engineer Cody McSwain was promoted to captain on Engine 41, A shift.

McSwain began his fire service career in 2005 and has 12 years of experience, nine of those with the Kannapolis department. He is the recipient of the 2011 Firefighter of the Year award.

Senior Firefighter Caleb Barnhardt was promoted to engineer on Ladder 14, A shift.

As a teenager, Barnhardt joined as an original member of the Fire Department’s Explorer Post 001 and is an Explorer adviser. He has seven years of fire service experience, most of which is with the Kannapolis department. He volunteers and works part time with the Rockwell City Fire Department.

“I am confident in the ability of those promoted to these roles in that they will continue to advance the core values of the department. I look forward to their continued growth here at KFD,” said Hiers.
