Published 7:54 am Friday, September 1, 2017
UPDATE: Rowan County is under a tornado watch until 10 p.m. tonight.
Severe thunderstorms are in the area; a tornado could form at any time.
While we did not have the severe weather predicted yesterday, it may come today.
The moisture from the remnants of Harvey, coupled with strong winds aloft and an unstable atmosphere, will increase the potential for severe thunderstorms. The primary threats will be damaging straight-line winds and isolated tornadoes.
Isolated activity could begin late Friday morning roughly along and south of Interstate 85, with a greater potential Friday afternoon and evening
over the entire region.
There is also a lingering heavy rain threat, so flooding and flash flooding are possible.
Today’s chance or rain is 80 percent, and we may see patchy fog throughout the day. It will be 73, with east wind at 5-9 mph. A half to three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible.
Expect showers tonight, mostly before 2 a.m., with a 90 percent chance of rain. Fog could form as early as 7 p.m. East winds will be at 5-11 mph. The low will be 66. Another half to three-quarters inch of rain is possible.
Saturday will have a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with patchy fog in the morning. It will be partly sunny and 81, with south southwest wind at 6-11 mph.
Saturday night will be partly cloudy and 61, with southwest wind at 3-6 mph.
Sunday will be mostly sunny and 83, with west northwest wind around 6 mph. The low will be 60, with clear skies.
Labor Day will be sunny and 85, a nice change. The low will be 63, with clear skies.
Tuesday will be mostly sunny and 87, then a 30 percent chance of showers moves in Tuesday night after 10. It will be mostly cloudy and 65.
The chance of showers and thunderstorms increases to 50 percent Wednesday, which will be mostly cloudy with a high of 80. The same chance of rain holds through Wednesday night, with a low of 60.
Thursday will be mostly cloudy and 74, with a 40 percent chance of showers.
