Salisbury’s football team hosts Mountain Heritage High, from Burnsville, tonight at 7:30 p.m.

The Hornets (1-1) haven’t thrown the ball a lot in the early going under new coach Brian Hinson, but they’ve thrown effectively.

Griffin Myers is 20-for-28 for 328 yards to lead the county. Trell Baker is the county’s leading receiver with five catches for 171 yards and two TDs.

The threat of Baker has  helped open things up on the ground for  Salisbury backs Raheim Walker and Mike McLean. Those two have given the Hornets a balanced offense.

Sophomore linebacker Jabril Norman is emerging as a playmaker on defense and had three sacks in last week’s 41-12 win against Carson.

Mountain Heritage (2-0) is expected to be one of the better teams in 2A and has pounded Brevard and Asheville Erwin, rushing for almost 400 yards per game.

QB Trey Robinson, the coach’s son, is one of the best athletes in the mountains. The 207-pounder has rushed for 525 yards and seven TDs on 47 carries in MH’s first two games. He’s also thrown for 179 yards, so the Hornets will have their hands full.

North Rowan at Lexington was postponed to Monday, and East Rowan-South Rowan also is set for Monday.

Prep cross country

In the pre-CCC meet at Salisbury Community Park, North Davidson’s girls won with a score of 69. South Rowan, led by winner Madison Lowery, was second with 76. Salisbury (92) was fifth.

Leah Cressler was sixth and led Salisbury. Ellen Simons was ninth.

Ledford (35) won the boys meet. South Rowan (69) was second. Salisbury (106) was fifth.

Keegan Dillon ran 18:13 for fourth place and led Salisbury. South Rowan’s Noah Julian was sixth in 18:28.

College baseball

East Carolina named Eric Tyler (South Rowan) as a volunteer assistant coach. Tyler finished an outstanding career with the Pirates last spring.

Mid. school softball

On Thursday, Sept. 7, Erwin will host North Rowan Middle at the East Rowan High field.

All former   softball players are invited to honor the memory of Coach Starr Forney.

Prep volleyball

South Rowan got a CCC win against Oak Grove on Thursday.

Janiya Downs had 15 kills, Anna Blume had 13 digs and five aces, Michaela Hallman had 13 assists, and Kira Rymer had eight digs and eight kills.

Anna Rymer and Jessi Rollins led South’s jayvees to a win vs. Oak Grove. Rollins had seven aces, while Rymer had five kills.

Carson swept Robinson in a non-conference match to improve to 7-1.

Intimidators

Dylan Cease opened with five scoreless innings, but the Greensboro Grasshoppers took advantage of Intimidators errors and beat Kannapolis, 4-0, on Thursday.

The Intimidators play at Lakewood, N.J., tonight.

  Kannapolis is playoff-bound by virtue of winning the SAL Northern Division’s first half championship and will host Game 2 of the Northern Division Series on Friday, September 8.
