Salisbury Shag Club golf tournament scores big for at-risk kids, local charities

SALISBURY — The Salisbury Shag Club held its 20th annual golf tournament Aug. 19 at Corbin Hills Golf Club.

The tournament started at 1:30 p.m. with 92 golfers teeing off.

Among the players was Al Wood, a former University of North Carolina basketball star who now does ministry work helping at-risk youth avoid alcohol and drugs and learn to make the right decisions.

The winning team with a 53 was Keith Dorsett, Michael Dorsett, Ross Brown and Chace Jensen.

The second-place team, shooting a 54, was Steve Vail, David Roueche, Mike Redwine and Wood.

Third place was a four-way tie at 56. The team claiming third in a scorecard playoff was Gary Veach, Jerry Newhaus, Mike Harrington and Rufty Patterson.

Closest-to-the-pin winners were Charlie Isley, Steve Shuping, Rick Moore and David Roueche. Longest drive for men was won by Roueche; for women, Judy Patterson.

The tournament began with a meal catered by Chick-Fil-A. Vendors and donors provided food and beverages.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Al Wood’s “Yes You Can” Foundation and several local charities.
