Area Sports Briefs: Labor Day golf qualifying this weekend

Qualifying for the Labor Day 4-Ball tournament at the Country Club of Salisbury will take place this weekend.

The prestigious annual event will feature 138 teams, with 95 competing for berths in the 16-team Championship Flight. All of these teams will be qualifying from the black tees.

There are 22 Senior Division teams trying to qualify for 16 spots from the white tees.

The 16 Super Senior teams will be competing for seeding purposes from the gold tees.

Players in the Women’s Division will be competing for seeding from the red tees.

This years events does not include the championship pairing from last year, as Troy Beaver turned professional and is not eligible.

Charlie Barr, Beaver’s partner last year, will be teamed with  Michael Childress.

In the event of ties on a divisional cut line or for the medalist of a division, there will be a sudden-death playoff starting at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Country Club of Salisbury.

Susan Wydner made her first career hole-in-one on Sunday during McCanless Couples play.

She aced the 108-yard No. 3 hole with a 26-degree Hybrid club.

Witnessing the feat were Wydner’s husband,  Jim, Walt Kincaid and Vernon Hunt.

Fifty-seven GARS members played in foursomes at Rolling Hills this week.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was David Adams with a net of 61.55. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Steve Masingo with a net of 58.65. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Len Kersey with a net of 63.07.Low ‘D’ Flight player was Carrol Downey with net of 68.03. Low gross score was Edgar Osborne with a 69.

Winsten Mahaffey, 80, shot a 75; Frank Masingo, 81,  shot a 77; Clive Mahaffey, 82, shot a 78; Ralph Luther, 83, shot an 83; Buddy Barger, 83, shot 80; Ralph Brown, 86, shot 84; O.J. Chandler, 88, shot 82, and J.C. Ritchie, 92, shot a 78.

Prep cross country

The Pre-Rowan County Meet is set for Thursday at Dan Nicholas Park.

The boys will run at 5 p.m., while the girls will run at 5:45.

Prep soccer

Salisbury struggled to find the back of the net and lost to West Stanly, 1-0, on Tuesday.

Salisbury held the visitors to three shots on frame, but the only goal was scored  by the Colts with 11 minutes left in the contest.

SHS hit the post or the crossbar  three times and out-shot West Stanly, 13-5.

Salisbury (1-1-1) got solid play from Pedro Cruz, Danny Tinajero, and the goalkeeping/center back tandem of Jack Fisher and Josh Faulkner, who split halves in both positions.

Next up for the Hornets is the CCC opener at home next Monday vs. Thomasville. The jayvees play at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity game at 7 p.m.

Salisbury’s scheduled game with North Rowan was canceled.

  Cristyan Cabrera scored a goal for West Rowan in a 7-1 loss on Tuesday to Northwest Cabarrus.

Jose Guerrero had an assist.

Jaxon Wheeler scored the Carson goals in Tuesday’s 2-1 win against South Rowan.

Jordi Cortez scored for  the Raiders.   

Prep tennis

Davie County’s girls won at West Rowan, 8-1, on Tuesday. Tabby Landy was the lone winner for the Falcons.

Prep volleyball

South Rowan rallied to beat East Davidson, 24-26, 20-25, 25-13, 25-10 and 15-12 on Tuesday.

It was the CCC opener for South (3-2, 1-0).

Michaela Hallman had 40 assists for the Raiders, and Jenna Strickland had 30 digs.

Janiya Downs had 31 kills and 13 digs.  Kira Rymer had 19 kills, 15 digs and four aces.  Anna Blume  had 19 digs

Anna Rymer had 10 assists and six kills as South’s jayvees swept the Golden Eagles.

West Rowan swept its third straight opponent on Tuesday, taking care of Northwest Cabarrus, 25-14, 25-11 and 25-19 in non-conference action.

East Rowan lost at Wheatmore, 25-8, 25-13 and 25-17 in a non-conference match on Tuesday.

“They were very disciplined, very organized and made very few errors,” East coach Sandy Lytton said. “We played OK. We got better each set and didn’t get discouraged.”

Wheatmore reached the 2A semifinals last year and  played in the state championship game in 2015.

Leah Mesimer had nine assists for East. Leah Wyrick had seven kills and five assists. Olivia Wright had six kills.

East’s jayvees lost , 25-17 and 25-17. Hannah Larson had two aces and two kills.

Intimidators

Jake Burger had three hits, but the Kannapolis Intimidators lost to Greensboro, 5-2, on Tuesday in Kannapolis.
