EAST SPENCER — East Spencer resident Jamilla Kennedy is stepping into the world of politics in hopes of serving on the town of East Spencer board. Kennedy, 45, is a medical office administrator and cosmetologist. This is her first time seeking an elected office.

In June, Kennedy fulfilled her mother’s dying wish to open a rooming house or transitional house in East Spencer. She also opened the Save the Children Community Center, located at 102 S. Long St. The center is a site for summer meal programs, summer camps and mentoring opportunities.

Kennedy is a single mother of five children, one of whom is in college. Kennedy says her priorities are water resolution, economic growth and community uplift. She did not elaborate on any further priorities or reasons for running for the town board.

Current East Spencer Mayor Barbara Mallett, James Cowan and Teon Robinson are running for mayor while Tony Hillian, Douglas Holmes, Phronice Johnson, Tammy Corpening and Otis Gibson are also running for the town board.
