Area Sports Briefs: All-SAC football teams announced

The preseason All-South Atlantic Conference football teams were announced Thursday.

Catawba receiver Sam Mobley, offensive lineman Quinzavious Sands, kicker Brennan Lambert, defensive lineman  Jordan Hemingway, Catawba, linebackers Kyle Kitchens and Trey Evans  and DB Cris Page were first team picks.

Catawba’s second team picks were QB Reid Carlton, running back Eamon Smart, defensive lineman Trevor Bembry, linebacker Michael Peppers and DB Jeremy Addison.

The Catawba Indians will help open the football season at home against St. Augustine’s on Thursday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m.

Local golf

In the 8th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship, East Rowan graduate Nick Lyerly was a qualifier.

Lyerly shot 72-73 — 145 at Treyburn Country Club in Durham. He tied for 20th and is seeded 27th for today’s opening round of match play against No. 6 seed Nolan Mills.

Two rounds of match play will take place today.

The 36-hole cut line fell at 2-over (146) for the low 32 players to advance into match play. An 11-for-5 playoff was needed to determine the final match play competitors.

Eric Edwards (Salisbury, George Mason) shot  69-77 — 146 and was eliminated in the playoff.

Bryce Hendrix shot 69-68 — 137 and is seeded No. 1.

In the 13th Dogwood State Junior Boys Championship, Salisbury’s Michael Childress shot 76-78-77 — 231, 15-over, and tied for 38th.

Salisbury’s Charlie Barr shot 76-79-82 — 237, 21-over, and tied for 60th.

Pinehurst’s Fulton Smith won the tournament. He was 5-under.

Intimidators

Micker Adolfo mashed two home runs in a game for the first time in his career to power the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 7-5 win over the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 7-5, on Thursday night at First National Bank Field.

   Kannapolis  (58-50) won its fifth straight to match its longest streak of the season. The Intimidators continue a four-game series at Greensboro tonight at 7 p.m.   The Intimidators return home on Monday, Aug. 7.

Legion baseball

Kentucky and West Virginia were eliminated from the Southeast Regional on  Thursday in Asheboro.

The two unbeaten teams after two days are Randolph County, the host as well as the North Carolina state champ, and Florida champ Tallahassee.

Wilmington, the NC runner-up, stayed alive on Thursday afternoon by pounding Kentucky, 9-1.

Four straight hits  in the fifth, including singles by Alex Brooks, J.P. Graham and Brad Pennington, gave Wilmington a 3-1 lead.  Jac Croon’s two-run homer made it 5-1.

Randolph used a  complete game five-hitter from Bobby Weary to beat Georgia, 4-0.

In games today at MCCrary Park, Wilmington takes on Georgia in a 1:30 p.m. elimination game.

Alabama takes on South Carolina champ Florence in a 4:30 p.m. elimination game. Randolph and Florida tangle at 7:30 p.m., with the winner moving into the driver’s seat in the double-elimination event.
