Summer Sip Crawl

Friday, Aug. 4 is the third annual Craft Beer tasting crawl event in downtown Salisbury, from 5- 9 p.m.

Choose from over 30 locations. Ticket includes an official Summer Sip tasting mug, a walking map and wristband, and a maximum of 20 craft beer samples.

Hop on the trolley to catch a ride, enjoy great food, friends, and of course – beer.

Tickets for the Summer Sip Craft Beer Tasting Tour are $25 + tax and fees. Doors open at 4 p.m. Must be 21 or over to participate and must show ID.

Rowan Helping Ministries is accepting submissions of cover designs for its 2017 Christmas Honor Card through Friday. Designs should reflect Rowan Helping Ministries’ mission of helping neighbors in need and “Putting God’s Love into Action.”

The Christmas Honor Card raises funds to provide critical services to those living in poverty or struggling to make ends meet.

Foothills Folk Art Festival

Deadline Sept. 1. Event is in downtown Newton on Oct. 7. $75 application fee for local and regional contemporary folk artists, artist demonstrations, hands-on art activities for children, live music. Salisbury Symphony auditions

The Salisbury Symphony Orchestra will hold auditions for principal percussion, section strings, and any others who want to be on the orchestra’s substitute list. Music director David Hagy will hear auditions on Sept. 9 in the Williams Music Building on the campus of Catawba College. Auditionees will be asked to play a prepared piece of their choice, excerpts of the music director’s choice, and sight-reading.

Audition repertoire

All auditions will include a solo work or concerto movement of the player’s choice and sight-reading from the orchestral literature as well as the excerpts listed below.

PRINCIPAL PERCUSSION: Kabalevsky Colas Breugnon Overture Xylophone • Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2: III Cymbals • Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade: IV Snare Drum • Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade: IV Tambourine • Brahms Symphony No. 4: III Triangle • standard drum set accompaniments

SECTION STRINGS: (primarily for substitute list) • (Violinists may prepare first OR second violin parts.) • Beethoven Symphony No. 3 first movement • Brahms Symphony No. 3 first and last movements

Other instrumentalists interested in being included on the substitute list should prepare standard excerpts for their instrument. Occasionally a specific excerpt will be required for a specific instrument. Please contact David Hagy at 704-637-8611, to inquire about any specific repertoire.

The Galleries celebrates 10 years

CONCORD — It’s a celebratory year for The Galleries, which marks its tenth anniversary this month with a special exhibition, Ten.

Ten’s artists exemplify the diversity of The Galleries’ past exhibitions throughout the last decade.

The 25 artists featured in Ten include Ráed Al-Rawi, Byron A. Baldwin, Elizabeth Bradford, Regina Burchett, Robert Alvin Crum, Carolyn DeMeritt, Susan Edmonson, Ingrid Erickson, Kiki Farish, Andy Farkas, Louise Farley, Charles Farrar, Holly Fischer, Timothy Ford, Harriet Marshall Goode, Paul Keysar, Roger Martin, Jerry Measimer, Sonia Handelman Meyer, Terri Otten, Walter Stanford, Beth J. Tarkington, Yuko Nogami Taylor, Jennie Martin Tomlin and Anatoly Tsiris.

The new exhibition opens today, Aug. 3 and runs through Oct. 20, and will feature the current works of 25 artists whose pieces have shown in The Galleries.
