The Salisbury-Rowan Chapter 4314 of AARP will hold its annual Ice Cream Social on Thursday, Aug. 3, at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, 1120 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.

The program begins at 1 p.m. with a presentation featuring “Senior Nutrition: Meals on Wheels (MOW) of Rowan.” Guest speakers will be the new MOW Rowan Executive Director Cindy Fink and Program Director Sandy Combs.

“Today homebound seniors and disabled individuals face food insecurity. Over 200 individuals receive nutritious meals due to the effort of over 1,000 volunteers,” according to Fink, a Salisbury native who recently returned home after several years of working in other areas of the state. “Volunteers are essential to the mission of Meals on Wheels. Without them we could not deliver meals across Rowan County every Monday through Friday.”

Several local AARP members are volunteers in the program. “We learned about Meals on Wheels several years ago at an AARP meeting,” according to AARP member Eileen Hanson-Kelly. “We love delivering the meals and getting to know the clients. It takes just an hour of our time, but adds a special spark to our lives.”

Meals on Wheels of Rowan is a United Way member agency established in 1976.

The Ice Cream Social will follow the MOW presentation, with a build-your-own-sundae table of goodies to top off the ice cream. The event is free and all seniors 50 and older are welcome to attend. Members are encouraged to bring a friend.

The local AARP chapter meets the first Thursday of each month at Rufty-Holmes starting at 1 pm. The last meeting of each quarter is a potluck lunch starting at 12:30 p.m. For more information contact 704-216-7714.
