Alpha Kappa Alpha Fashionetta Pageant

The members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Graduate Chapter held the Miss Fashionetta Pageant on June 24 at Varick Auditorium on the campus of Livingstone College. The Miss Fashionetta Pageant is the annual fund raiser sponsored by Delta Xi Omega to support community service projects and educational grants for high school seniors.

Nine young ladies participated in the pageant ranging in ages from 11-14. They attended workshops on etiquette, bullying, and completed a community service project at Food for Thought. The evening of the pageant, the young ladies and their escorts performed a creative literary piece. The participants modeled fashions for school, recreation and church.

Mya Noble was crowned Miss Fashionetta 2017. She is the daughter of Michael and Andrea Noble. Mya’s escort for the event was Joshua Noble, son of Angela and Ed Lindsey.

Miss Fashionetta 2017 first runner-up was Alanna Rivers. She is the daughter of Dennis and Natalie Rivers. Alanna’s escort was Miles Green, son of Rodney and Leslie Green.

Other participants were Tiffani Gadson, who was voted Miss Congeniality by her peers. She is the daughter of Demarte and Shanikka Harris and the late Ahmad Bognuda.

Angelique Griffin, daughter of Quamekia Shavers and Jontai Griffin; Briana Nichols, daughter of Brandi Ellis and Quentin Nichols; Daphne Robinson, daughter of Theodora Dequita Robinson; Miracle Shavers, daughter of Cyena Shavers and the late Catherine Shaw; Janaysia White and Janiya White, daughters of Shameka Jackson.

Other escorts and ushers for the Fashionetta Pageant were Elijah Sellars, Ethan Sellars, Omereo Robinson, Robert Moulton, Michael Cartwright, Brycen Kirk, and Brandon Kirk. Ms. Quamekia Shavers escorted her daughter Angelique.

Entertainment for the event was provided by Janae Russell, Alanna Rivers, Gabrielle Jumah, Nadia Lindsey, Briana Nichols, and Miracle Shavers.

Sh’Myra L. Moore is the president of Delta Xi Omega Chapter. Fonda Kirk is the chairman of the Fundraising committee and Sheila Brown-Miller is the chairman of the Fashionetta Pageant.

The 91st annual Sloop family reunion 

KANNAPOLIS — The 91st annual family reunion of Jacob Henry Hall Sloop and Mary Catherine Deal Sloop is today at New Hope Lutheran Church, 1615 Brantley Road.

Family and friends are invited to attend the 1 p.m. lunch and are asked to bring a well-filled picnic basket and beverage. The Charles M. Sloop family will be hosting the event. A brief business meeting will follow the lunch. A special presentation commemorating the 500th anniversary of The Reformation will be performed by family members. The Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary Pop-Up Tent Event is 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, July 29 at 220 Grace Church Road.

‘Christmas in July: Lore of the Belsnickle, Santa’s Cranky Cousin’

MT. PLEASANT — The Eastern Cabarrus Historican Society will present “Christmas in July: Lore of the Belsnickle, Santa’s Cranky Cousin,” a presentation by Dr. Gary R. Freeze, professor of history at Catawba College in Salisbury.

The presentation will be held in Mt. Pleasant Society Hall, 1100 N. Main St., on Sunday, July 30 at 2 p.m.

Dr. Freeze is the author of “The Catawbans,” a trilogy of books about the history of Cabawba County and the surrounding area. His general interest in the German influences in this area led to his interest in “Belsnickling” and the lore of this Cranky Christmas Cousin of Santa who was known to bring a wallop with a whip or switch as well as candy and gifts.

Register for artist workshop with Mark Stephenson 

Using Frederick Franck’s book “The Zen of Seeing- Drawing as Meditation” as a jumping-off-point, locally-known artist Mark Stephenson will lead a day-long session on the art of seeing. August 12 will begin at 10 a.m. with a guided discussion/presentation on Franck’s work and philosophy, followed by an afternoon instructional drawing session in which participants can apply the principles found in Franck’s text. Suitable for beginning-advanced artists of all kinds. Held at Center for Faith & the Arts, 207 W. Harrison St.

Cost: Full-day: $40 • Morning session only: Suggested donation to CFA $10 • Participants are encouraged to read the Franck text before attending the workshop. About the instructor: North Carolina native Mark Stephenson is an artist based in central NC. A graduate of Pfeiffer University, North Carolina State University and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Stephenson earned degrees in civil engineering and vocal performance.

He was selected for a 2017 Cultural Arts and Development Grant from the Rowan Arts Council, where he will attend a week-long workshop at Cullowhee Mountain Arts, after which he will prepare new works to be exhibited at the Center for Faith and Arts in December 2017.

In May of 2014, Mark was artist in residence at La Macina di San Cresci, Italy. He has received grants and awards from many organizations including the Portrait Society of America, The Arts & Science Council, the Rowan Arts Council. His teaching experience includes workshops and demonstrations for Binders Art Supply, Sandhills Artist League, Matthews Artist Guild, Monroe Art League, Cabarrus Art Guild, Stanly Art Guild, Artifex Studio, and many others.
