Fourth Annual Dragon Boat Festival on July 29 on High Rock Lake

The Fourth Annual Rowan Chamber Dragon Boat Festival will be held on Saturday, July 29, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Shrine Club on High Rock Lake, located at 6480 Long Ferry Road in Salisbury.

Title sponsors are Novant Health Rowan Medical Center and Trinity Oaks/Trinity at Home/Lutheran Services of the Carolinas.

“The Rowan Chamber is passionate about health and wellness and being a part of an event of this magnitude that brings together family fun and competition, tying it in with High Rock Lake, our natural resource here in Rowan County is a win-win for the community. We have been pleased to be associated with the Dragon Boat Festival for all four years,” said Teresa Dakin, chair of the Dragon Boat Festival Committee. “It highlights our quality of life with abundant water resources, friendly people and unique team building opportunities for businesses!”

More than 25 teams will compete and over 3,000 people are expected to watch. The event is free to attend; however, no pets, coolers or outside food will be allowed. Besides the actual competition of the colorful Dragon Boat races, food vendors will be joined by local iconic soft drink companies Cheerwine and United Beverages/Miller Beer. New Sarum Brewery will also feature their craft beer products for sale. New this year, Morgan Ridge Vineyards in Gold Hill will offer their local wine and craft beer. There will be entertainment during the lunch break, with local student dancers and drum corps. This year, space will also be available for recreation sporting equipment vendors for boats, kayaks and paddle boards.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and make it a fun lake party. Parking is free and available in adjacent lots to the Shrine Club. The Salisbury/Rowan County Convention and Visitors Bureau will provide trolley rides to and from the parking areas. Look for the signs as you come down Long Ferry Road. At the end of the day on Saturday, Olympic-style gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented in the top three divisions and gold in the fourth division.

The Chamber has contracted with High Five Dragon Boat for the fourth year in a row. High Five will provide each team with all the necessary equipment — boat, paddles, life vests. Teams will learn how to paddle during an introductory practice session, which is included in team registration fee. Each team will need to provide 20 paddlers — a minimum of eight must be female — and a drummer. On race day, each team will compete in three heats on a 350m straight course.

Salisbury Business Center, located in downtown Salisbury, celebrates 3 years with one of its first tenants – Salisbury native Seth Waller, owner of Falcon Investments

Salisbury Business Center (SBC) recently celebrated three years with one of its first tenants — Seth Waller, owner of Falcon Investments. Falcon Investments is now one of 10 businesses that currently resides in the 42,000-square foot Salisbury Business Center building located in historic downtown Salisbury at the corner of South Main Street and Bank Street.

Waller and his wife Kristen grew up in Salisbury. The couple moved back to the area several years ago to start a family and business. Waller manages an investment portfolio of individual stocks for clients, provides active investment management strategies inside of 401Ks and 403Bs, and provides other retirement and financial planning services for businesses, families and trusts throughout North Carolina.

He moved in to the Salisbury Business Center building shortly after construction was completed in 2014. The building’s developer and primary tenant Integro Technologies, a high-tech machine vision engineering company, occupies the majority of the building. The remaining space is leased to businesses and organizations. Tenants share common areas including a fully equipped conference room with teleconference capabilities and furnished break areas. They also share the benefit of a live receptionist for greeting and announcing guests in the reception area of the lobby and daily mail receipt. A large parking lot with free parking is located onsite.

Tenants also have the ability to rent the 76-seat Salisbury Auditorium which is located in the building at a reduced fee. Jenny and Peter Hoadley retire from County Cleaners after 33 years in business
Following a long, successful career in the Concord community, founders and owners of County Cleaners, Jenny and Peter Hoadley, announced they will retire and sell their business in 2017.

The Hoadleys, both natives of the U.K., built their first dry cleaning plant on Branchview Drive in Concord in 1984. The plant officially opened in May 1985. By 1991, business boomed and a second cleaning plant was built on South Cannon Boulevard in Kannapolis, North Carolina. By the early 2000s, a total of seven stores had been opened in Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg and Charlotte.

The stock market crash of 2008 was no obstacle for County Cleaners. The company expanded again by developing a home pick-up and delivery service in Cabarrus and surrounding counties.

“It has been an honor to serve this community and lead the company along side my wife, Jennifer, and sons, Mark and Jonathan,” said Peter Hoadley. “I’d like to express my deep appreciation to my long-standing staff, who have been like a second family to me; especially Lynette Harrington, Tammy McDonald and Becky Smith.”

The Hoadley family thanks the community for their support and credits them for their success. Peter Hoadley has been a Concord resident since 1978. Although his civic mindedness and strong ties to the community remain, the original owners will be missed. Over the years, the family has participated in many organizations, including the 4H Foundation, Salvation Army Auxiliary, Cabarrus Rotary Club, Small Business Chamber of Commerce, and the Boys & Girls Club.

County Cleaners was established by Peter Hoadley in 1984 and provided same-day, high-quality dry cleaning and laundry services to residents of Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg and Charlotte. County Cleaners was sold to Phan Co. Cleaners in March 2017.

Several Novant Health medical centers have been recognized by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association for exemplary care of patients. The awards recognize the hospitals’ commitment and success in ensuring patients receive the most appropriate treatment for stroke, heart failure and cardiac arrest according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines built on the latest scientific evidence.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, according to the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. Stroke ranks at No. 5.
