Three new volunteer tutors have completed the ProLiteracy training program during May, according to the Rowan County Literacy Council.

“RCLC is very excited to welcome Samuel Drye, Debra Chirico and Denise Jacobs to our volunteer tutor team. Their commitment and enthusiasm are tremendous assets as we continue to expand our literacy programs in Rowan County,” said Laurel Harry, the council’s program coordinator.

Drye, Chirico and Jacobs attended an orientation and then completed an eight-hour online training program from home. Upon successful completion of all modules, the three received the ProLiteracy tutor certificate of completion, which certifies them to tutor at any ProLiteracy-affiliated program nationwide.

All three have already been paired with students and have begun giving one-on-one instruction.

“I am happy and honored to help others learn to read and write. They are the heroes to me,” said Chirico.

The program has several students on a waiting list, and tutors are always needed. Tutors and students typically meet once a week for a 90-minute class.

The mission of the Rowan County Literacy Council is to provide literacy instruction to all ages regardless of ability to pay. As a nonprofit organization, the council’s primary focus is free, confidential, one-to-one tutoring by trained volunteer tutors.
