One person was temporarily displaced on Saturday after a fire damaged an apartment on Statesville Boulevard.

The fire, which started after 1 p.m., occurred at Westside Manor Apartments. The complex is adjacent to Salisbury Fire Station No. 4. The apartment’s occupants were not home when the fire started, said Salisbury Fire Department Fire Operations Manager David Morris.

The fire did not extend into the attic or other units, Morris said. However, the fire “gutted” the apartment’s kitchen, he said. There was smoke damage throughout the apartment unit. A cause for the fire was not immediately clear.

“The crews did a good job and making a quick attack on it,” Morris said. “Fortunately, they contained the fire to the kitchen.”

At one point, first responders shut down Statesville Boulevard to access a water point, according to scanner traffic.

A second alarm was briefly called for the fire. It was canceled after firefighters quickly got the blaze under control.

Multiple agencies responded to the fire, including: the Salisbury Fire Department, Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department, Locke Fire Department and the Rowan County Rescue Squad. Granite Quarry and Rockwell city fire departments were canceled en route.
