The Salisbury-Rowan National Association for the Advancement of Colored People held the coronation of its Woman/Mother of the Year on April 30 at Hall’s Chapel Primitive Baptist church. Area churches sponsored candidates vying for this honorable crown.

The Woman/Mother of the Year Pageant is a fundraising project. The monies raised are used to supplement the money that comes from local, state and national budgets.

Dawn M. Courtney Mason was crowned winner of the contest. She was sponsored by Tower of Power united Holy Church of America where her husband, Rev. D.M. Mason serves as pastor. Nehemiah Mason was his mother’s escort. As queen, she was presented with a wrist corsage, a crown and a framed certificate, a dozen red roses, a one year NAACP membership and an expense paid trip to the NC Woman/Mother of the Year Pageant in Sanford.

Runner-up Renia Cook was sponsored by Hall’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church and escorted by her brother, Tony Breazeale. She received a wrist corsage, a framed certificate, a dozen white roses and a one year NAACP membership.

Other program participants were Velveeta Reid-Hairston, Yolanda R. Woods, chairman, Rebecca Stinson, Annie Boone-Carroll, Rev. Ruby Steele, Levonia Corry, Jai’da Atkins and Mia Mason. Gemale Black is president of the S-R NAACP.
