Area Sports Briefs: Stinson to be honored

SALISBURY    Livingstone College head basketball coach James Stinson will be honored at the  HBCU Living Legends Scholarship Gala on Aug. 26 at the Grand Pavilion Ballroom at the Embassy Suites in downtown Winston-Salem.

Stinson  led the Blue Bears to back to back CIAA basketball titles in 2014 and 2015.

The HBCU Scholarship Gala is a community-based initiative that celebrates the impact and importance of the 11 HBCU’s in North Carolina.

The purpose of the initiative is to raise money for scholarships for deserving students at each institution and to honor the achievements of the alumni of each school.

Tickets to the gala are available by visiting http://www.hbculivinglegends.com/. Tickets are $100 per seat or $1,000 per table of 10 seats. The deadline for reserving a table is July 15th and must be secured online.

Stallions win title

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions won the CAASC state championship on Thursday at Guilford College.

The Stallions defeated Clover Garden (Burlington), 10-0.

The Stallions put together a complete team effort with solid defense and timely hitting.

Seth Cauble pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven.

The Stallions were led   by Clay Pinion, McConner Wallace and Cauble with RBI doubles.

Reilly Ploplis, Weston Cregger, Dalton Lankford and Thaddaeus Lankford drove in runs for the Stallions.

AJ Knight and Camron Wallace also contributed   hits. The Stallions finished the season at 26-9.

Intimidators fall

  Hickory’s Yanio Perez and Ricky Valencia homered to power the Crawdads past the  Kannapolis Intimidators, 6-4, on Thursday night at Intimidators Stadium.

Kannapolis (20-17) rallied in the eighth inning but came up short.

College baseball

Appalachian State’s Brian Bauk (Salisbury) had two hits in a 5-0 loss to Coastal Carolina on Thursday.

Colton Laws (Carson) pitched Charlotte to a 5-3 win against Marshall on Thursday.

Laws (6-2) allowed two earned runs in six innings.

Local golf

Steve Honeycutt made a hole-in-one on Thursday  at Corbin Hills.

Honeycutt aced the 175-yard No. 16 hole with a 6-iron.

Rotary Tennis

Deadline to sign up  for the tournament is Monday, May 22.

The tournament will be held Memorial Weekend from Friday, May 26 (matches start at 4 p.m.) through Sunday, May 28.   

The event offers adult and junior divisions for singles, doubles and mixed doubles competition.  Adult entry fees are $25 (1st event), $10 (2nd event).  Junior entry fees are $15 (1st event) and $5 (2nd event).
