Happy Farms’ annual Salute to Veterans
Saturday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
The Salute To Freedom Tunnel is finished, and veterans are invited to bring a photograph of themselves that can be displayed in the tunnel, and then enjoy free lunch at the hot dog roast. Happy’s Farm, at 985 Parks Road near Happy Lake, invites the family to visit on this Salute to Veterans Weekend. Children’s activity passes will be available for $5 and all proceeds help support Happy Farm’s Veteran H.E.R.O project.
The facility is a western-themed tutoring facility where children can have access to affordable academic tutoring and child care. The farm is named after William “Happy” Trexler, the first owner of Happy’s Lake. Visit http://www.happysfarm.org/ or call 704-279-5268 to learn more.

Horizons Unlimited is preparing for its summer meal and activity program for local school children and are is actively seeking donations of gently used children’s books for its Little Free Library, which gets a tremendous number of readers when school closes. Book signing event Friday
Tracie Barton-Barret, author of “Buried Deep in Our Hearts,” a book about grief over the loss of a pet, will be signing books at South Main Book Co. from 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday. Opens tonight at Lee Street theatre — ‘Boeing Boeing’
“Boeing Boeing” is a classic French farce that boasts the Guinness World Records most performed French play.
Set in the 1960s, it follows Bernard, a handsome bachelor living in Paris. He is simultaneously seeing three different airline stewardesses and succeeds in his infidelity as their flight schedules never overlap. Until now.
The cast includes Caitlin Billings as Gloria, Jacob Brayton as Bernard, Tim Campbell as Robert, Sarah Rae Dover as Gabriella, Sara Lee as Gretchen, and Jessica Walker as Berthe under the direction of Brad Stephenson, a professor at Catawba College.

Annual SPC strawberry festival

SPENCER — Strawberries are ripe and ready for eating! Don’t miss the annual strawberry festival at Spencer Presbyterian Church Sunday, May 21 from 1-3 p.m. in the fellowship hall and on the grounds. Strawberry desserts will be served at no charge.
Entertainment will include performances by Elvis impersonator Michael Thomas; gymnast Rylan Furr; vocalists Quincy Cook, Mallory Braun, Alexis Cowan, North Rowan Middle School “Newest Edition”; NRHS band members; and other local performers. The church is located on 1st Street, across from the entrance to the NC Transportation Museum.
Darryl Rhoades headlines Wednesday at The Comedy Zone at The Loft

Darryl Rhoades’ show is original and energetic. Some of his comedy parody songs have been included in movie soundtracks and featured on Dr. Demento’s syndicated radio show. He has been an entertainer most of his life, including being a drummer and band leader, and has been a standup comedian for more than 20 years.
Andy Forrester started in Raleigh in 1999. His off the wall humor is likeable, self-deprecating, fun and easy going. He has opened for Marc Maron, Jimmie “JJ” Walker, Kevin Pollak and Greg Giraldo.

58th annual Rowan Rose Show is Saturday

Rowan Rose Society’s 58th annual Rose Show will be held in the former JC Penney building at the West End Plaza, 1935 Jake Alexander Blvd. West, from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, May 20.
Previously, the Rose Show has been open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons; this year the Show will be open on Saturday afternoon only, so plan to attend on Saturday from 1-5 p.m.
The Show will feature hundreds of rose blooms, including the large flowered hybrid teas that everyone loves, as well as new varieties, fragrant old roses and miniature roses. A special display will contain award winners from each class, including Queen of the Show. This wide variety of roses offers an excellent opportunity to select favorites to grow in your own garden.
Society members will be present to advise on best practices for growing roses. Membership in the Rowan Rose Society, normally $20, will be available at half price.
In addition to displays of individual roses, a large section will be devoted to a variety of beautiful flower arrangements emphasizing the use of roses.
All area rose growers are welcome to enter roses between 6:30 and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
At the close of the Show on Saturday, show roses will be sold. Proceeds will benefit the American Rose Society. For more information, call 704-633-7024.

Bennett Place hosts a Memorial Day Military Timeline Event next weekend
DURHAM — Memorial Day is a time to remember the sacrifice that so many men and women have made for the freedoms we treasure. America has a rich history of selfless acts of bravery and sacrifice beginning with the American Revolution and continuing to the present day. The holiday we commemorate as Memorial Day began following the American Civil War in communities across America that wanted to pay tribute to soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Sen. John A. Logan, a former Union officer on staff with Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, was instrumental in making this a formal national day honoring our fallen soldiers.

Top Air Show Returns to Seymour Johnson AFB this weekend
SEYMOUR JOHNSON AFB, GOLDSBORO — Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the 4th Fighter Wing and military aviation in North Carolina, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will open its gates to the public for the biennial Wings Over Wayne County Air Show, Saturday and Sunday, May 20-21.
Headlining the air show will be The Blue Angels, the US Navy’s premier aerial demonstration team, performing a myriad of precise formations and maneuvers in six distinctive blue and yellow F/A-18 Hornet aircraft. Soaring at speeds of 120 to 700 mph, pilots will exhibit their extensive training and aircraft capability through extreme passes, rolls, tight turns, opposing passes, inverted flying, belly-to-belly flight, wingtip-to-wingtip formations, and the famous Diamond and Delta configurations.
Gates open at 8 a.m. Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is home to the 4th Fighter Wing, consisting of approximately 7,000 people and 95 multi-role F-15E Strike Eagles. Formerly commanded by Chuck Yeager, the 4th Fighter Wing is one of the largest wings in the United States Air Force and has a highly decorated history spanning seven decades.
