Davie County’s softball team exited the 4A softball playoffs on Tuesday with a 5-2, third-round loss at Richmond County.

Coach Dawn Lowery’s War Eagles finished 22-5.

Richmond took a 5-0 in the first three innings. Davie got single runs in the fourth and sixth.

Davie had five hits, with K’lea Parks, Bridgett Tierney, McKenzie Barneycastle, Makenzie Smith and Sierra Ferguson getting one each.

Cox Mill staged a dramatic rally in the seventh inning and won at Ledford, 6-4, in the third round of the 3A state playoffs.

Bailey Johnston homered in the seventh to tie the game, and Kayla Smith’s two-run homer put up Cox Mill on top.

Cox Mill takes on Sun Valley on Friday in the West semifinals.

Hickory Ridge pounded 15 hits and crushed Marvin Ridge, 10-2, in the third round of the 3A state playoffs.

Lindsey Powell had three hits and was the winning pitcher. Ally Todaro had three hits and drove in four runs. Malaya Black had three hits. Dakota Christie had two hits and two RBIs.

The top-seeded Bulls will host Piedmont in a West semifinal.

Piedmont eliminated Central Cabarrus, 7-6. Central got two hits each from Jordan Baker and Maranda Benton.

Tennis Entry Deadline

Tournament is Monday, May 22.  The tournament will be held Memorial Weekend from Friday, May 26 (matches start at 4:00) through Sunday, May 28.   The event offers adult and junior divisions for singles, doubles and mixed doubles competition.  Adult entry fees are $25 (1st event), $10 (2nd event).  Junior entry fees are $15 (1st event) and $5 (2nd event).

Prep golf

WHISPERING PINES — Cannon School finished second in the two-day NCISAA 3A championship at the Country Club of Whispering Pines here Monday and Tuesday.

Cannon’s 582 was 13 strokes behind Raleigh Ravenscroft’s 569.

Ravenscroft may have won the tournament with a sparking first-round score of 280. Cannon shot a 294 on Monday and then rebounded with a 288 on Tuesday. Ravenscroft shot a 289 during the second round.

Salisbury’s Michael Childress shot 77-78 (155) for Cannon, to finish 18th individually.

Following Ravenscroft and Cannon were Charlotte Latin (618, Durham Academy (620), Charlotte Christian (623), Asheville Christ School (624), Forsyth Country Day (629) and Charlotte Providence Day (637).

Intimidators win

ROME, Ga. — Alec Hansen blanked the Braves over 6 and 2/3 innings to pitch the Intimidators to a win, 5-1, on Tuesday morning at State Mutual Stadium. 

Kannapolis (20-16) used a pair of 2-run home runs by Brandon Dulin and Seby Zavala to capture the series in Rome and finish the team’s swing through the Peach State 5-1.

Hansen (3-3) struck out seven while limiting the Braves to four hits and two walks en route to the win.  Only two base runners reached second base against the 6’7” right-hander.  Hansen, the White Sox second round pick in the June 2016 First-Year Player Draft, scattered three infield singles to hamper the Braves offense over the first six innings.

Dulin belted his team-lead-tying fourth home run (4) of the season, a moonshot to right field in the top of the second inning, scoring Zavala for a 2-0 lead.  In the fourth, Max Dutto lined his second double of the game to right field, and Joel Booker followed with a run-scoring single up the middle to cash Dutto for a 3-0 lead.

In the eighth, Zavala launched a no-doubt home run (5) to left field, reclaiming the team-lead with five bombs on the season.  The blast scored Antonio Rodriguez for a 5-0 lead to put the game out of reach.  Rome tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth against Kevin Escorcia before Mike Morrison finished the game with a scoreless ninth.

Rome starting pitcher Bryse Wilson (2-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits, including a home run, while striking out four and walking one in 5.0 innings of work.

The Intimidators are off Wednesday before opening a 5-games-in-4-days home stand against the Hickory Crawdads on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
