NHRMC Auxiliary

The Annual Membership Tea of the NHRMC Auxiliary was held on May 4 at the home of Dari Caldwell, president of Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. This year’s event celebrated the 81st anniversary of the auxiliary which was founded in June 1936. Over the years the organization has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the medical center. Donations are used to purchase new equipment, provide nursing scholarships to qualified students at Rowan Cabarrus Community College, provide Volunteer Scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have participated in the Junior Volunteer Program, and provide financial support to the medical center community. Care Bears and coloring books are provided by the auxiliary to pediatric patients and pink ribbon socks to women undergoing breast procedures.

Most recently, the Auxiliary made a donation towards the purchase of a 3D mobile mammography scanner. Auxiliary volunteers are utilized in various areas of the medical center, including the gift shop, surgical support center, nursing units, transportation, and outpatient center. Junior volunteers, ages 14-18, provide assistance during the summer and holidays. Last year, 168 volunteers donated almost 13,000 hours of service.

Anyone interested in volunteering can find more information at www.novanthealth.org or by contacting Diane Hundley at 704-210-5082.

AARP Chapter President Receives Community Service Award

Submitted by Eileen Hanson-Kelly

Sylvia Fosha, president of the AARP Salisbury-Rowan Chapter #4314, was honored with the annual Community Service Award from the National AARP at a recent meeting at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center.

Every year, as part of the National Volunteer Week in April, the National AARP recognizes exemplary volunteers who serve their fellow citizens in countless ways every day, bringing AARP closer to fulfilling its purpose of empowering people to choose how they live as they age.

Fosha was nominated by the Salisbury-Rowan Chapter Board for her involvement with the AARP Foundation Tax Aid program, which annually serves over 1,000 in our community with their taxes at no cost.  She also assists with the Older Americans Celebration held annually at the Salisbury Civic Center during May, which is Older Americans Month.  This event brings together residents of area nursing homes for a day of food and fellowship.

This past year Fosha was instrumental in bringing the AARP Financial Workshop to Salisbury in conjunction with area churches and other non-profits, helping over 375 people with personal and family financial issues.  She recently helped set up a “Train the Trainer” workshop to train others to help with future workshops in the community.

In presenting the Certificate of Recognition and a commemorative pin to Fosha, Chapter Treasurer Eileen Hanson-Kelly stated, “By her leadership Sylvia has inspired others in our local chapter to become more involved as volunteers in our community.  She is well-deserving of this honor.”

The Salisbury-Rowan AARP Chapter meets the first Thursday of each month at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, 1120 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.  The next meeting is June 1 beginning with a hot dog lunch at 12:30 p.m., followed by fun and games directed by staff members of the Senior Center,  All senior 50+ are welcome.  Annual chapter dues are $4 and visitors are always welcome.  For more information contact 704-216-7714.
