Area Sports Briefs: Hornets advance in tennis regional; Davie softball wins CPC tourney

Two Salisbury  tennis doubles teams advanced to the semifinals of the 2A Individual Midwest Regional.

Roarke Burton/Adam Drye and Jander Rodas/Sean Archer have qualified for the state tournament.

Prep softball

  Second-seeded Davie County beat No. 1 seed North Davidson, 8-0, in the Central Piedmont Conference Tournament softball championship game on Friday at Rich Park.

Olivia Boger pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven. Davie (20-4) got four runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh.

K’lea Parks, McKenzie Barneycastle and Makenzie Smith had two hits each. Parks drove in two. Bridgett Tierney and Barneycastle scored two runs each.

Top-seeded Hickory Ridge scored in the seventh to beat No.2 seed Cox Mill, 4-3, in the South Piedmont Conference Tournament championship game on Friday at Hickory Ridge.

Lindsey Powell drove in two runs for the Bulls, who got great pitching from Breezy Yelton.

Prep baseball

Second-seeded East Davidson  scored three runs in the first inning and won, 7-1, against top-seeded West Davidson on Friday at Finch Field.

Darin Spivey had three hits and pitched a complete game.

Prep soccer

Mia Trexler scored for Carson in Friday’s 2-1 overtime loss to Robinson.

Prep track and field

Cameron Butler plans to sign with Coastal Carolina next week. Butler broke the school record in the 800 in the SPC Championships.

College golf

For the second straight year, George Mason’s Eric Edwards (Salisbury)  earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors in a vote by the league’s coaches.

Edwards finished in the top 10 four times during the 2016-17 season.

  Edwards set the single-season school record with a 71.70 scoring average. Edwards’ three-year scoring average of 73.88 is second-best in school history.

College baseball

East Carolina senior Eric Tyler was named the American Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week.

Tyler led the Pirates with a .533 (8-for-15) average last week and had three multiple-hit games.

Tyler had two hits and one RBI in Friday’s 8-6 loss to South Florida.

Local golf

CAMDEN, S.C. — Salisbury’s Michael Childress and his Cannon School teammate Lansdon Robbins have moved into the quarterfinals of the 66th annual Carolinas Four-Ball Championship at Camden Country Club.

Childress and Robbins, seeded third of 32 two-man match-play teams, defeated No. 30 Robert Dargan-David Dargan on Friday, 1-up.

The young duo then advanced out of the round of 16 when the team of Sammy Truett and Bert Atkinson withdrew.

Childress and Robbins will play No. 18-seeded Matthew Laydon-Chris Mitchell today in the quarterfinals. Semifinals will also be played today and the championship concludes the event on Sunday.

Hurley 5K

The new Buck Hurley 5K will be held on Sunday morning, May 7, at the Hurley YMCA. Start time is 7:45 a.m. and race day registration is available from 6 to 7:30 a.m. All participants get a dri-fit singlet and are eligible for awards for top three overall and top three in 13 age groups for men and women.
