Area Sports Briefs: Carson wins in extras; West clinches tie

Clayton Gilmore walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to lift Carson to a 4-3 win against Cox Mill on Thursday.

Cameron Prugh pitched eight innings for the Cougars and struck out five. Maddux Holshouser (5-3)  pitched the ninth and got the win.

Gilmore and Luke Barringer had two hits each for Carson.

Carson led 3-0 early. Cox Mill tied it with a three-run fifth.

The win kept Carson (16-7, 13-5) in contention for a share of the South Piedmont Conference title.

West Rowan (17-5, 13-4) clinched a share of its third straight SPC title by beating Hickory Ridge, 5-1, on Thursday.

Austin Love (5-2) pitched five innings for the win and got relief help from Daniel Durham and Brandon Walton .

Love allowed only two hits, but walked five while striking out four.

Love and Brett Graham had RBIs.

West finishes the regular season tonight at Cox Mill.

Softball

West Rowan (13-4, 13-4 SPC)  lost to first-place Hickory Ridge, 2-0, on Thursday despite a fine pitching performance by Hannah Roberts.

Lindsey Powell shut out the Falcons (13-4) and also drove in a run. The Bulls got both runs in the third.

Cox Mill scored in the eighth inning to beat Carson, 1-0, on Thursday.

South Rowan won against East Rowan, 2-1. Brooke Lowery drove in both South runs in the seventh.

Jalee Rollins had three hits for South, while Riley Corriher had two.

Coryn Soul had two hits for East. Caroline Johnson hit a solo homer.

Whitley Arnott struck out nine for the Raiders.

Bree Medlin struck out four for the Mustangs.

Davie County routed Mount Tabor, 16-0, on Thursday in Central Piedmont Conference action.

Sierra Ferguson and Jessica Beck homered.

Olivia Boger pitched a no-hitter in the three-inning game.

 

Prep tennis

The Central Carolina Conference Tennis Tourney resumed Thursday with semifinal action at the Bingham Tennis Center in Lexington.  Here are the results:

Rhiannon Kimmer had two goals for South Rowan in Thursday’s 5-0 win against East Rowan.

Raquel Landaverde had three assists. Taylor Mauldin had a goal and an assist.

Madison Henry and Mary Jester scored goals.

Salisbury (14-1-1, 7-0) won 9-1 against East Davidson to stay in first place in the Central Carolina Conference on Thursday.
