SALISBURY — A fire near the intersection of Cooper and Hill streets Wednesday tossed a plume of black smoke into the sky and ripped through an abandoned house.

A number of calls about the fire came in shortly after 10 a.m., said Salisbury Fire Department Training Chief David Morris. The building appeared to be abandoned, Morris said. Windows were tightly boarded up.

Morris said there were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, Morris said. The power and gas service were off.

Morris called the fire suspicious.

Graffiti that read, “The king wuz here” marked the front of the house.
