UPDATE: From Salisbury Police Department — The traffic accident investigation has been completed.  The driver of the Hyundai, Karen Alexander, was cited for entering the intersection while the traffic signal was emitting a steady red light in her direction.

SALISBURY — Salisbury Mayor Karen Alexander was injured in a traffic accident Thursday at the corner of South Fulton and West Monroe streets.

Alexander, whose injuries were not life-threatening, was taken by ambulance to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.

According to the Salisbury Police Department, Alexander was driving a 2014 Hyundai northeast on South Fulton Street and ran the red light at the intersection of West Monroe Street.

The car hit a 2002 Lexus traveling southeast on West Monroe Street. Neither of the people in the Lexus — driver Miles Walker  and passenger Zaedrian Harris, both of Salisbury — were injured.

The crash occurred just after 1 p.m.

Alexander had been scheduled to attend the city’s second Community Action Planning Session. Council member David Post opened the meeting and said Alexander had been in a minor accident.
