Stanly County Arts Guild offers art scholarship

The Stanly Arts Guild is offering an art scholarship to a high school senior planning to enroll or college freshman enrolled in a visual arts or arts education program.

Applicants must be residents of Stanly or an adjoining county, including Anson, Cabarrus, Montgomery, Rowan and Union. A total of $1,000 will be awarded with a check of $500 to be applied to tuition cost for two semesters.

Applications may be picked up at Falling Rivers Gallery, 119 W. Main St., Albemarle, or downloaded at www.fallingriversgallery.com by clicking on Stanly Arts Guild.

Application requirements must be completed and returned to Falling Rivers Gallery by 3 p.m.  May 20 to be considered for this award.

Youth symposium held
by Sigma Gamma Rho

The Salisbury Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. hosted its annual youth symposium on March 11 at Isenberg Elementary School.

The symposium — open to middle and high school students — covered gender-specific self-esteem awareness, financial awareness, health and fitness sessions all in support of the theme “Youth Investment: Building a Future for Impactful Leaders.”

The chapter, chartered in 2010, hosted the event in support of the sorority’s annual Youth Day held on the second Saturday in March throughout the nation as part of the national initiative Project Reassurance.

Treasure Feamster Scholarship available

The deadline to apply for the Interdenominational Ministers Fellowship Treasure Feamster Scholarship is April 3.

Applications will be received through April 3 and must be postmarked by that date.

The scholarships are available for high school seniors who are members of an IMF-affiliated church, regardless of their chosen field of study.

High school seniors can check with their guidance office or affiliated churches for applications or information.

CIS Scholarship available
to Rowan County students

A scholarship is available to students graduating from a Rowan-Salisbury Schools high school who is or has been enrolled in a Communities in Schools of Rowan school site for at least one school year during their school career.

Those schools include: Hanford Dole, Koontz, North Rowan and Overton elementary schools; Granite Quarry Elementary (prior to 2006-2007 school year); Knox and North Rowan middle schools; and North Rowan and South Rowan high schools (prior to 2014-2015 school year)

The recipient must demonstrate how the mission of Communities in Schools — “to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life” — helped him to reach graduation.

This scholarship, sponsored by CIS of Rowan County, will be awarded to honor Executive Director Vicky Slusser for her many years of service to the students served by Communities in Schools.

At least one scholarship will be awarded to a 2017 graduate. The amount is yet to be determined and is subject to the support of school and community donors. A minimum of $500 is expected.

Applications are available in all Rowan-Salisbury high school guidance offices.

Applicants should show the following: eligibility to graduate in good standing from an county high school during the 2015-16 school year; an essay of approximately 500 words on how CIS helped them succeed in school; and three personal references — one of which must be from a high school teacher; a description of extracurricular activities or community service; a statement of financial need; and an interview with the scholarship committee.

Applications — including letters of recommendation, personal essay, college acceptance letter and high school transcript — should be submitted to CIS of Rowan County, Attn: Scholarship committee, 204 E. Innes St., Suite 240, Salisbury, NC, 28144.

Applications are due April 15.

Community college
to open aquarium to public

Davidson County Community College will open its aquarium to the public on four days in April.

Aquarium Days offer a family outing and give visitors a first-hand look at the aquarium, animals and facilities. Participants also can learn more about the zoo and aquarium science program DCCC offers.

Aquarium days are free and open to the public.

Aquarium viewing times are:

• 10 a.m.-noon Saturday.

• 5-7 p.m. Tuesday.

• 10 a.m.-noon April 8.

• 5-7 p.m. April 11.

The aquarium allows visitors to explore the Indo-Pacific reef, meet Melvin the pufferfish and learn about other sea creatures.

The aquarium is on the Davidson campus.

Current DCCC students enrolled in the zoo and aquarium science program will be on hand to discuss and answer questions about the exotic terrestrial and aquatic animals.

These animals include tarantulas, scorpions, lobsters, an Amazonian pacu, a trained puffer, a ball python and a Honduran milk snake.
