Area Sports Briefs: Catawba baseball, softball sweep
Catawba’s baseball team swept Wingate on Saturday at Newman Park, finishing off a 6-0 win in a game suspended by weather on Friday and then taking a seven-inning contest, 5-2.
Catawba (18-7, 9-2) holds a one-game lead over Tusculum in the South Atlantic Conference race. Tusculum (15-8, 8-3) has won six in a row.
In the first game, Connor Johnson (East Rowan) pitched five shutout innings to follow up the four zeroes that starter Russ Weiker put up on Friday. Johnson struck out seven.
Nick Coble blasted two homers for the Indians, and Kyle Smith hit one.
In the second game, Hunter Shepherd (Cabarrus Stallions) earned the win by pitching into the fifth inning. Four relievers held a lead and got the game into Bryan Blanton’s hands. He closed it.
Coble, Smith, Luke Setzer (East Rowan) and Ben Bomberger swatted home runs.
Today’s game with Wingate is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Newman Park.
Brooke Walser won both games as Catawba swept a SAC doubleheader at Brevard.
In a 10-1 win, Caroline Turner knocked in four runs. In a 14-2 romp, Delane Smith went 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Taylor Martin (West Rowan) had two hits in each game.
