Area Sports Briefs: Weather wins vs. area baseball

East Rowan’s baseball game with North Davidson was halted with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning on Wednesday, with the Black Knights leading,  9-6.

The game will be resumed and completed today at 5 p.m., at Granite Quarry’s Staton Field.

The last pitch  before the rains came  resulted in a three-run homer by Chandler Blackwelder, his third hit of the game.

Freshman left-hander Jake Davis started on the mound for the Mustangs.

North Rowan dropped its opener to Central Cabarrus, 11-2, on Wednesday in Spencer.

Joe Harrison took the loss, but North’s issues were mostly with the gloves. The Vikings (2-0) scored seven unearned runs.

Newcomer Mark Parra had the only hit for the Cavaliers.

The Carson-Mooresville game was postponed to today.  The South Rowan-A.L. Brown game was postponed to Saturday afternoon.

Prep soccer

South Rowan’s girls won against Salisbury, 2-1, on Wednesday.

The game at South was shortened because of lightning.

“It’s not how we wanted to win, but we did hold on,” South coach Kyle Neal said. “It’s a great way to start the season.”

Salisbury’s Katie Bullock, Julia Honeycutt and Ceci Cardelle put a lot of pressure on the Raiders’ defense in the second half.

South’s first goal came from freshman Madison Henry. Katelyn Goodman got the winning goal off an indirect free kick.

Raquel Landaverde assisted on both South goals.

College softball

The Pfeiffer softball team has moved into the national rankings thanks to a school-record 15-1 start.

Pfeiffer is No. 18 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.

Of the Falcons’ 15 wins ,  five have come in Pfeiffer’s last at bat.

Pfeiffer has won a school-record 11 straight games. Pfeiffer’s loss was to No. 10 Lenoir-Rhyne.

Davie’s Heath Slabach was named to the All-CPC boys basketball team, while Davie’s  Sha’veh Martinez was named to the All-CPC girls basketball team.

Prep basketball

The 3A Western Regional finals will be played at Fleming Gymnasium at UNC Greensboro.

The Cox Mill boys will take on Freedom at noon.

The Hickory Ridge girls will take on Freedom at 2 p.m.

Hurley YMCA

The J.F. Hurley is taking registrations for girls volleyball through March 13. The league is for grades 4-8. The cost is $42 for members and $70 for potential members.

Registration for spring soccer lasts through April 3. The league is for boys and girls, Pre-K through eighth grade. Cost is $42 for members and $70 for potential members.  Register at the J.F. Hurley YMCA or online at www.rowanymca.org.
