Joshua Hall, a 10th-grader from Durham, N.C, will be competing in the NACA Nationals in Dayton, Tenn.

Hall plays for the  Oak Hill Academy Varsity Red Team  (high school of  Carmelo Anthony, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant).

Hall has been an integral part of the team all year.  Oak Hill Varsity Red is undefeated in tournament play and Hall has averaged 12 points in those wins.

Hall was a student at Morehead Montessori Elementary School, Lakewood Montessori Middle School and completed his freshman year at Southern High School for Energy and Sustainability.

Hall is the son of Quincy Hall, a West Rowan basketball star in the mid-1990s,   and Tenika R. Hall, from Salisbury.

Hall plays travel basketball with the Durham Hurricanes organization.

College golf

N.C. State’s Davis Richards (South Rowan) shot 80-72-69 — 221 and finished 5-over in the Puerto Rico Classic.

Davis tied for 36th and helped the Wolfpack finish third.

College track

N.C. Central’s Jaleesa Smoot (Salisbury) was named to the All-Academic team for the MEAC.

College tennis

Wingate topped host Catawba in both men’s and women’s South Atlantic Conference tennis action on Thursday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Center.

Wingate’s men claimed an 8-1 win, while the Bulldog women were 9-0 victors. Wingate improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in SAC play with the women moving to 4-1 and 2-0. The Catawba men are now 6-4 and 2-1 and the women are 8-2 and 1-2.

College lacrosse

Catawba (1-1) doubled up visiting Roberts Wesleyan in the second half and rallied for an 11-9 victory in women’s lacrosse action on Thursday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.

Roberts Wesleyan led 5-3 at the break with Cassley Jackowski scoring all five goals for the Redhawks.

Madison Anselmo  came up with three saves in the final minute and finished with 15 saves.

Catawba hosts West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 7 pm.

Women’s basketball

Lynchburg’s Alex Allen (Carson) had a career-high 18 points and five rebounds in an 89-85 win against Eastern Mennonite.

Allen shot 8-for-10 from the floor.

Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Mars Hill in Wednesday’s win against Tusculum.

It was the fifth double-double of the season for the freshman.

Shay Steele  (West Rowan) had eight points and four rebounds for Morehead State in an 81-52 win against Tennessee Tech.

Amy Steller (Davie County) had seven points and three assists as Guilford won against Washington & Lee, 66-62.

Guilford is 21-3.

Prep boys hoops

Lavar Batts Jr. scored 25 points to lead Robinson to an 89-74 win at North Buncombe in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

North Stanly was eliminated from the 1A state playoffs by Bishop McGuinness and finished 20-8.

Prep girls hoops

Nia Daniel had 22 points and 12 rebounds as Hickory Ridge romped against North Gaston, 67-33, on Thursday in the second round of the 3A playoffs.

Hickory Ridge is 28-0.

Mahaley Holit scored 29 points to lead Central Cabarrus to a 66-61 win against Asheville Erwin on Thursday. Elanna Peay scored 15 for the Vikings.

Holit has 1,999 career points.

7th-grade hoops

Erwin’s girls defeated Mooresville, 38-34.

Mary Spry had 23 points for Erwin (12-0).   Katelyn Griggs added six points. Leah Hinceman had four points.

Camden Stamper was the leading scorer for the Bulldogs (6-6) with 13 points. Athan Gill had a triple-double with 11 points 11 rebounds and 10 blocks.

Noah Loeblein, Jason Artis, and Spenser Harrison had strong defensive games for West.

Hunter Barris led Southeast (3-9) with 6 points.

West will play Knox on Monday.

49ers win

CHARLOTTE, N.C.   — Jon Davis scored 23 points and Braxton Ogbueze and Austin Ajukwa combined to add another 31 as Charlotte snapped a three-game losing streak by upsetting Western Kentucky in a Conference USA battle Thursday night.

The victory keeps the 49ers in ninth place with three games remaining in the regular season, and knocks the Hilltoppers into a tie with Texas-San Antonio for the seventh seed.

Charlotte had lost five of its last six games coming into the contest.

The 49ers shot 45.6 percent from the field (26 of 57), including 8 of 22 from long range. But the difference came at the free throw line, where Charlotte (12-14, 6-9) hit 23 of 29 attempts — 11 more attempts than Western Kentucky (13-15, 7-8).

Davis hit 6 of 11 from the floor. Ogbueze added 16 points and Ajukwa contributed 15.

Pancake Thomas had 23 points for Western Kentucky, which shot 51.7 percent from the field (31 of 60).

No. 4 Arizona rolls

TUCSON, Ariz. — Allonzo Trier scored a season-high 25 points, including four 3-pointers, and Arizona remained alone atop the Pac-12 standings.

Rawle Alkins added 12 points and Lauri Markkanen had 11 for the Wildcats (26-3, 15-1) in Arizona’s 21st consecutive home win.

Bennie Boatwright scored 23 points and Chimezie Metu had 15 for the Trojans (22-7, 8-7).

The Wildcats closed the first half with a 12-2 run and were up by as many as 16 points in the second half.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — T.J. Leaf scored 25 points for UCLA.

The Bruins (25-3, 12-3 Pac-12) won their sixth straight game. Aaron Holiday added 17 points and Thomas Welsh had eight points and 11 rebounds in 18 minutes.

Torian Graham led Arizona State with 28 points and Kodi Justice added 19. The Sun Devils hit 14 3-pointers but were outrebounded 49-30.

The Sun Devils (13-16, 6-10) scored the first seven points of the second half and got a near capacity crowd on its feet when Shannon Evans II made a fastbreak layup to trim UCLA’s lead to 45-43.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Jacob Evans III scored 12 of his 15 points during Cincinnati’s dominant first half and the Bearcats held on for their 25th straight home victory.

Cincinnati (25-3, 14-1 American Athletic) led by as many as 24 points during its highest-scoring opening half in conference play this season, pulling ahead 51-32 at the break. The Tigers cut the lead to six points before fading.

The Bearcats’ front line dominated. Gary Clark had 13 points and nine rebounds while Kyle Washington had 16 points and six rebounds.

Memphis (18-10, 8-7) has dropped a season-high three straight. Jeremiah Martin led the Tigers with 23 points and Dedric Lawson had 21 with 10 rebounds.

OHIO ST. 83, No. 16 WISCONSIN 73

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — C.J. Jackson scored 18 points on 4-for-4 shooting from 3-point range for Ohio State.

JaQuan Lyle had 17 points and Jae’Sean Tate added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Buckeyes (16-13, 6-10 Big Ten), who snapped a three-game losing streak and beat a ranked team for the first time in nearly a year.

Bronson Koenig had 27 points for Wisconsin (22-6, 11-4), which lost the lead in the game’s first minute and could never get any traction. The Badgers have lost three of four.

Ohio State led by 12 points with 10 minutes left on a 3 by Lyle and never let Wisconsin get closer than nine points.

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — Jock Landale had 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead Saint Mary’s.

The Gaels (25-3, 15-2 West Coast) continued to roll in winning 10 of their last 11 games. Their only loss in that stretch was to No. 1 Gonzaga.

Lamond Murray Jr. had 17 points for Pepperdine (9-20, 5-12), which lost its third consecutive game.

A power outage caused the lights to go out with 18:41 left in the second half. Pepperdine official Roger Horne said power surges throughout campus caused the 15-minute delay. Players stayed loose by shooting in the dark.

The delay didn’t slow down Saint Mary’s, which led 41-21 before the lights went out. Landale, the junior center from Australia, had an empathic dunk for the first basket after play resumed and the Gaels cruised from there.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Josh Perkins and Jordan Mathews scored 15 points apiece, and Johnathan Williams had 14 points and 19 rebounds for No. 1 Gonzaga, which overwhelmed San Diego 96-38 on Thursday night to improve to 29-0 and clinch the West Coast Conference title.

The 58-point victory margin was the biggest of the season for Gonzaga, which also has won games by 47, 46 and 39 points.

And it was merely the latest laugher for Gonzaga (17-0 WCC), the only unbeaten team in Division I. It has won all 17 conference games by double digits.

Nigel Williams-Goss scored 14 points and Zach Collins had 12 for Gonzaga.

Olin Carter III scored 15 for USD (12-17, 5-12), which has lost six straight and 39 of its last 42 games to Gonzaga.
