ClearWater Artist Studios brings the painting to the people

CONCORD — On Saturday, Feb. 18 from 3-6 p.m. Concord’s ClearWater Artist Studios will host its third annual Sun Drop Pound Cake Portrait Paint-Off Extravaganza, in the main gallery. All are welcome. In this free event, painters bring blank canvases to life in front of an audience — fine art as a spectator sport.

Emcee will be Concord and Kannapolis reporter and impresario Michael Knox, reporter for the Independent Tribune. Refreshments include Sun Drop Pound Cakes, homemade chips and salsa and Sun Drop soda. Art studios throughout the building will be open with resident artists present, and the Southern Piedmont Woodturners Association will hold turning demonstrations in their studio throughout the three-hour event.

This year’s featured painters are Mark Stephenson, Robin Wellner, Gordon C. James, Barbara Ellis and Isaac Payne. Additional space is granted to local painters wishing to paint from the ‘2nd row,’ on a 1st-come/ 1st served, email-reservation basis. The painters will have just two hours to complete their portrait of the live model, with breaks every 20 minutes. Emcee Knox calls time, and entertains in his own fashion.

ClearWater Studios is located at Concord’s former water treatment and electrical operations buildings; now artist studios/gallery still in development, at 223 Crowell Drive NW.

CF&A seeks visual and spoken word artists

Center for Faith & the Arts is seeking visual and spoken word artists for an upcoming exhibit and gallery event exploring bias, prejudice and intolerance in our society. So often intolerance arises out of being afraid of what is different. Different races, different religions, different lifestyles. CFA wants to explore through art how these fears impact our lives and how we respond to such unreasonable fears.

Visual artists are invited to submit two and three dimensional works of art exploring this theme. Each artist may submit up to five pieces for consideration. Submissions are made by emailing photographs to Nancy Gaines, Program Coordinator for CFA, at ngaines@fibrant.com

Deadline for submissions is March 10.

A small selection of the works will be hung in the lobby of Lee Street theater during the performances of Voices from the Margin, March 23-25. These pieces will be moved to the galleries at CFA after the performances to join the other works.

Center for Faith & the Arts will host a gallery event of spoken word performances on April 14 focusing on the same theme. Spoken word artists interested in performing should submit a short video, description or transcript to ngaines@fibrant.com by March 31.
