Prep track and field: Two Falcons finish second in 3A state meet

West Rowan’s boys indoor track team placed 10th in the 3A State Championships held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.

The Falcons had two second-place finishes in the Saturday afternoon meet.

Senior Cameron Butler was runner-up in the  1000 meters in 2:37.22. He was edged by Marvin Ridge’s Mason Bhatia.

Freshman Jalen Houston was second in the 55 meter hurdles. Houston ran 7.66 but was nipped by Jacksonville’s Jacobi Lloyd.

Houston and Butler scored eight points each.

West also got four points from senior Deyquan Byrd, who placed fifth in the long jump with an effort of 21 feet, 4 inches.

West’s 20 points were good for 10th place in the team standings. Marvin Ridge won the title.

Junior pole vaulter Chloe Kirkpatrick scored four points for the Carson girls in the 3A Championships with a fifth-place finish. Kirkpatrick cleared 10 feet.

In Saturday’s 4A State Championships, A.L. Brown junior Daniel Hernandez placed sixth in the 1600 meters in 4:27.40, a personal best.
