Fundraiser brings attention to hunger by filling ‘Empty Bowls’

“Empty Bowls,” aimed at raising both awareness and funds toward ending hunger in Rowan County, was held Thursday evening at North Hills Christian School. Proceeds benefited Rowan Helping Ministries, and a large crowd filled the many tables in the school gym.

Guests received a simple meal, which included soup, a drink and dessert, then were able to choose a handcrafted bowl of their choice. The bowl served as a reminder that someone’s bowl is always empty and the community must continue its efforts to alleviate hunger.

The hundreds of pottery bowls on hand were made by North Hills Christian School students and by some of the shelter guests of Rowan Helping Ministries. Pottery 101 offered pottery classes for the shelter residents through a grant funded by the Rowan Arts Council, N.C. Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Tickets were $5 for children, $10 for adults, and $25 for a family.

Providing soup for Empty Bowls were 12 local restaurants and the culinary school at Livingstone College. North Hills Christian students and Scouts worked at the event.
