Area Sports Briefs: Cavaliers take on Hornets at Catawba

Salisbury plays North Rowan tonight at Catawba’s Goodman Gym.

This is a varsity basketball doubleheader, with the girls game starting at 6 p.m.

Admission is $6. This is a neutral site game. No passes will be accepted from either school.

Backpacks are not allowed in the gym. Bags and spectactors are subject to search. There will be no re-entry.

Catawba and Livingstone students will sing the national anthem and will conduct a stroll at halftime in both games in observance of Black History Month.

Women’s basketball

Freshman Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) had 24 points and seven rebounds in Mars Hill’s  85-59 win against Brevard on Wednesday.

Farmer shot 11-for-15 from the floor. She scored 16 in the first half.

Farmer is averaging 10.8 points and 8.0 rebounds for the Lions.

Kelly Dulkoski (Carson) had 15 points for Kennesaw State in Wednesday’s 66-56 win against NJIT.

Men’s basketball

Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) scored 32 points on Wednesday to lead Augusta to a 75-71 PBC win against Francis Marion.

Sherrill scored the game’s first 12 points.

Local golf

Fifty-four GARS members played a Captains Choice at Corbin Hills.

The first-place team with a minus 13 consisted of Ray Pope, Bobby Bryant and Larry Petrea.

Two teams tied for second place with minus 11. The team of Bobby Wagner, Clayton Steele, and Bob Stepanian won a score card playoff for second.

The third-place team was Mickey Ousley, Reid Bradshaw, Doug Lingle and Carrol Downey.

The first-place team handicap with a minus-15  was Ousley, Bradshaw, Lingle and Downey.

Closest to the pin on No. 2 was Bradshaw.

Longest putt on No. 9  was by David Scearce.

Jayvee boys

In West Rowan’s 56-48 win against Concord, Zack Brawley scored 20 points and Payne Stolsworth had 19.

West was 8-0 this season against county opponents.

Jarron Hines scored 11  points for South Rowan in a 60-26 loss to Robinson.

Austin Peacock added six for the Raiders.

Salisbury’s boys won against North Rowan, 67-65, on Thursday to finish undefeated in CCC games.

Prep indoor track

State championships will be decided this weekend in Winston-Salem, starting with the 1A/2A Championships today.

The 4A Championships are Saturday morning, with the 3A Championships on Saturday afternoon.

7th-grade basketball

Erwin’s boys beat Corriher Lipe, 41-26.

Cameron Padgett led the Eagles with 15 points. Dylan Valley scored eight. Demario Chalk led the defense. Erwin plays at West Rowan on Monday.

  Erwin’s girls are 8-0 after defeating Corriher-Lipe, 48-4.

Madie Honeycutt led the Eagles with 10 points. Katelyn Griggs and Haley Dalton scored six each.  Lindsey Cook and Riley Isley had five apiece.
