SALISBURY – A Charlotte man was charged Tuesday after the vehicle he was driving had an expired license plate, police say.
Salisbury police charged Rodney Devon Evans, 23, of the 5500 block of Chasewind Drive, with felony possession of stolen goods, felony carrying a concealed weapon, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance Schedule VI and misdemeanor driving while license revoked.
Police reports said an officer stopped a gray Mazda traveling at Partee and West Monroe streets just after 3 a.m. The officer noted there were five people in the vehicle.
Rondey Evans, the driver, said he did not have a license. There were three people in the back seat. The officer said he could smell marijuana when Evans rolled down the window.
The front-seat passenger, Donovan Green, told police the car belonged to him. He was issued a citation for possession of an open container.
The officer asked if there were drugs in the car and one of the occupants said he had smoked a blunt earlier. The officer asked all five to step outside so they could be searched.
The officer searched the car and found 24.4 grams of marijuana that were in two bags in the cup holder and a 45-caliber Taurus handgun in the glovebox. Police said the handgun was stolen in Charlotte.
Police officials also said the driver, Rodney Evans, admitted the handgun and marijuana were his.
