Are you looking for an opportunity to sing your heart out? Would you like to feel more connected to your community? Do you want to have some fun and meet interesting people?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, then consider joining “Downtown Beats,” an impromptu chorus presented by Rowan Public Library. The community sing requires no experience or extended commitment by participants. It’s also free of charge.

Inspired by a friend’s experience with Popup Chorus in Carrboro, Pam Bloom, a library associate at RPL Headquarters in Salisbury, came up with the idea of “Downtown Beats” as a way for people “in the community to meet each other and have fun.”

“Downtown Beats” will hold its first community sing on Monday, Jan. 30, from 6-7 p.m. in the Stanback Auditorium at RPL Headquarters. 

Each sing will feature two songs: The tunes selected for Jan. 30 are John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s “With a Little Help from my Friends” and Bill Withers’s “Lean on Me.” Participants will practice the chosen songs, and the evening will end with the final performance being videoed. The footage from the chorus’s performance will be released on Rowan Public Library’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.

The impromptu chorus meets on the last Monday of each month, January through April. Each community sing will feature two songs (that will be announced beforehand) and a videoed final performance.
