Area Sports Briefs: South girls win

Janiya Downs scored 24 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead South Rowan’s girls to a 62-42 South Piedmont Conference win against Cox Mill on Tuesday.

Riley Corriher scored 14 for the Raiders. Brooke Lowery had a career-high 11.  Tazah “Z” Hardin had eight points, 11 rebounds and six steals. Whitley Arnott blocked four shots.

Maddie Rinkus scored 19 points for the Chargers, and Rachel Barker had 14.

Cox Mill topped South Rowan’s boys, 63-40, in SPC play on Tuesday.

South trailed by 12 at halftime.

Wendell Moore Jr. scored 22 for the second-ranked Chargers. Francis Sio had 21.

For South, Bailey Graham and Garrett Harrington scored eight each. Dillon Kluttz scored seven, and Tyler Peacock had six.

East Rowan’s girls lost at undefeated and top-ranked Hickory Ridge, 72-18, on Tuesday in SPC play.

Nia Daniel led the Bulls (17-0) with 13 points. Courtney Wagner, Caroline Houpe and Anna Shafer scored four  each for the Mustangs (4-14, 1-11 SPC).

East Rowan’s boys lost at Hickory Ridge, 61-44.

The Bulls pulled away from the Mustangs (3-15, 1-11 SPC) in the second half.

“We played good defense in the first half and we were in the game,” East coach Kurt Misenheimer said. “We just had trouble scoring in the first and third quarters.”

Paiton File led the Mustangs with 10 points. Lucas Morton and Ellis Taylor scored eight apiece.

Nick Ruggerio scored 15 to pace the Bulls.

  Salisbury swept the CCC Championships on Tuesday. The Rowan Championships are at the Hurley YMCA on Thursday.

Men’s basketball

Catawba is home tonight at 8 p.m. against SAC opponent Coker.

Livingstone is on the road at CIAA foe St. Augustine’s at 7:30 p.m.

Claflin’s Tre Williams (Carson) had eight points, seven rebounds and three assists in a 71-70 loss to Fort Valley State.

College lacrosse

  Lenoir-Rhyne was picked first in the SAC  men’s lacrosse  preseason poll. Catawba was picked seventh.

Queens was picked first in the SAC women’s lacrosse poll. Catawba was picked fifth.

SPC boys

  Jacob Irby scored 17 points and Hamsah Nasirildeen and P.J. Hall scored 13   each in Concord’s 76-73 win against Central Cabarrus on Tuesday.
