Joseph Bathanti, former North Carolina poet laureate
Join us for a poetry reading with Joseph Bathanti, former North Carolina poet laureate and professor of creative writing at Appalachian State University. In his newest book of poetry, The 13th Sunday after Pentecost (LSU Press), Bathanti offers poems that delve deep into a life reimagined through a mythologized past. Moving from his childhood to the present, weaving through the Italian immigrant streets of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to his parochial school, from the ballpark to church and home again, these contemplative poems present a situation unique to the poet but familiar to us all. As Bathanti recalls the joys, struggles, and confusion of his formative years in the late fifties and into the sixties, he gains a deeper understanding of the often surreal, always paradoxical world around him. He explores the perceived injustices of childhood, observes the mysteries of religious rituals, and examines the complex emotions families experience as children grow up and parents grow old. These poems divulge an eventful life, compelling us to reflect on our own as we confront a world of wonder and uncertainty.
He has published novels, nonfiction, and ten poetry collections. He served as the Poet Laureate for North Carolina from 2012 to 2014.

Charlie Lovett – Book Launch and Celebration
Set in the fictional English cathedral city of Barchester, Lovett’s latest novel, The Lost Book of the Grail, features Arthur Prescott, a lover of books and ancient manuscripts, who spends his spare time in the cathedral library nurturing his fascination with the Holy Grail. When American Bethany Davis arrives to digitize the medieval manuscripts in the library, Arthur’s old-fashioned sensibilities are challenged, but he is surprised to find in her a fellow lover of not just books but also the grail. The two embark on a search for a lost manuscript that tells the story of the cathedral’s founder and may contain clues about the location of the Holy Grail. The reader is immersed in 1500 years of history as the missing manuscript is followed from Saxon times through invasions by Vikings and Normans, the Reformation, the English Civil War, and even the Nazi blitz. The evening launch will feature music by the choir and actual medieval manuscripts on display.
