Area Sports Briefs: Sherrill surpasses 2,000 points

Augusta senior Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) surpassed 2,000 points on Wednesday as the Jaguars blew out Flagler.

Sherrill scored 20 points on 8-for-16 shooting to lift his career total to 2,005.

Sherrill is the second player in school history and  in Peach Belt Conference history to score 2,000.

Women’s hoops

Amani Ajayi (East Rowan) had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Averett in an 86-75 loss to William Peace.

Amy Steller (Davie) had 12 points and five rebounds for Guilford in a 66-45 win against Hollins on Wednesday.

Steller has been accepted into the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Western Carolina.

7th-grade girls

Erwin’s girls opened with a 40-26 win against West Rowan Middle.

The Eagles were led by Katelyn Griggs with 12  points. Mary Spry scored nine points, and Maddie Honeycutt had eight.

Hannah Isley scored five points, and Riley Isley had four.

West Rowan was led by Trinity Moreland with 12 points.

China Grove’s girls are 2-0 after beating Knox, 42-20.

7th-grade boys

Erwin’s boys opened with a 31-23 win against West Rowan Middle.

Cameron Padgett led Erwin with 14 points, and Demario Chalk added seven.

Athan Gill led West Rowan with eight points.

West Rowan will  play at Corriher-Lipe on Tuesday.

Rowan Little League

Rowan Little League baseball and softball registrations are from 9 until 3 on Jan. 28, Feb. 4 and Feb. 11 at  Godley’s Garden Center on Statesville Boulevard.

Parents can also register online anytime at http://www.rowanlittleleague.com.

New this year is girls T-Ball softball for (ages 4-6). Age is as of Aug. 31, 2017.

Baseball cost is $75 for all leagues: T-ball (ages 4-6), Coach Pitch (ages 7-8),  B  (ages 9-10), A (ages 11-12) 50/70 (ages 11-13) and 13-16’s. League age is as of Aug.  31, 2017.

Softball cost is $75 for all leagues: Girls 6U TBall Softball, 8U Coach Pitch (ages 6-8) 10U (ages 9-10), 12U (ages 10-12), Junior/Sr (ages 13-15).  League age is  as of Dec. 31, 2016.

In games tonight, North Rowan hosts Thomasville,  Salisbury is at West Davidson, East Rowan hosts Concord, West Rowan is home against South Rowan, and   Carson hosts Robinson.

Davie is at R.J. Reynolds. A.L. Brown hosts North Meck.

Carson’s Olivia Gabriel, a junior, has scored 999 career points entering tonight’s contest.
