Area Sports Briefs: 8th-grade championships decided today

Middle school 8th-grade basketball championships will be decided today at North Rowan Middle School.
Erwin’s undefeated girls will take on Southeast at 4:30 p.m. North Rowan Middle plays Knox for the boys title at 5:30 p.m.

Southeast’s girls rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half and defeated Knox, 27-22, in a semifinal.
Jaden Vaughn scored 10 of her 11 points in the fourth quarter for the Patriots. Tate Barger and Ellie Wilhelm scored five points apiece.
Leading Knox were Ellen Yang with 14 points and Lillie Rusher with six.

Erwin’s top-seeded girls advanced to the final by beating West Rowan, 43-14.
Carleigh Perry scored 18 points, Colbie Perry had 14, Jenna Robinson seven and Lani Isley four for the Eagles (16-0).

North Rowan’s boys won against Southeast, 53-45, to advance to the finals.
Zay Davis scored 21 points, Kendrell Goodes scored 14, Nick Colson had nine, and Javon Smith had four for the Mavericks. Jaharion Graham, James Gladden and Tyshon Sifford also scored for North.
College basketball
Livingstone is home at New Trent Gym today for a doubleheader against Fayetteville State.
Fayetteville State’s men have the CIAA Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week. Senior guard Joshua Dawson averaged 22.5 points last week in two wins. Redshirt freshman guard Josh Bryant averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.

Catawba’s teams are on the road tonight at Newberry. Newberry’s men have won seven in a row and are ranked ninth in the region.
Newberry forces 24 turnovers per game and ranks second in D-II in that category.

Gary Schenk eagled the par-4 No. 5 hole. Mick Rowell had an eagle on the par-4 No. 13 hole. Rowell won closest to the pin on the par-3 No. 10 hole.
Winsten Mahaffey 80, shot a 75, Clayton Steele, 84, shot an 80, Schenk, 84, shot an 82, O.J. Chandler, 87, shot an 82, and J.C. Ritchie, 92, shot an 86.

Pfeiffer had two forwards selected in the MLS SuperDraft. The Colorado Rapids took Jaime Siaj with the first pick of the third round, and the Philadelphia Union took Santi Moar with the 16th pick in the fourth.
College wrestling
UNC Pembroke won against St. Andrews, 46-6, on Tuesday. UNCP’s Brandon Sloop (Carson) won by pin at 165 pounds.
