Delta Xi Omega Chapter installs officers

Delta Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority recently installed the officers for 2017 at the December Chapter meeting.

Officers are: president, Sh’Myra L. Moore; vice-president, Vivian Ray; secretary, Lovetta Ealy Moore; assistant secretary, Earnestine M. Krider; corresponding secretary, L. Sh’Rae Moore; treasurer, Carolyn P. Holt; financial secretary, Renese Bates; assistant financial secretary, Linda McCullough; chapter hostess, Marsha Pruitt; sergeant-at-arms, Suzette H. Davis; public relations, Stephanie N. Morgan; graduate advisor, Carolyn P. Holt; historian, Shirley L. Holt and chaplain, Yolanda R. Woods.

Outgoing president Lillian L. Morgan and president elect Sh’Myra L. Moore highlighted accomplishments for the past year. Program activities for the year 2016 included the ASCEND Mentoring Program, One Million Backpacks, Think HBCU, Childhood Hunger Awareness, Seasonal Wraps, 1908 Playground Project, Heart and Stroke Awareness and Environmental Ownership. Chapter members donated coats, hats, and gloves to Rowan Helping Ministries and presented a monetary donation in December.

Shelia Brown-Miller was recognized with the SAIL (Soror Actively Involved in Leadership) award for 2016 for her devotion, commitment and leadership within the chapter and as chairman of the fundraising committee.

The first activity for 2017 will be the observance of National Founders’ Day celebrated on January 15. Chapter members will gather on January 14 to view “Hidden Figures,” the story of three African-American females employed by NASA. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Chapter members will also celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service by serving breakfast at Rowan Helping Ministries on Jan. 15.

 

Vince Coakley to speak at Tea Party meeting

The Rowan Tea Party Patriots host Vince Coakley at the monthly meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the Stateville Blvd. BlueBay Seafood Restaurant. Vince will share his thoughts on “Where We Go From Here.” He can be heard on talk radio station WORD from 10 a.m.-noon Monday-Friday. Optional dinner is at 6 p.m., and the meeting begins at 7 p.m.

 

28th Regiment meeting and program

The 28th Regiment NC Infantry Reactivated will hold its annual regimental meeting Saturday, Jan. 21, from 8:30 a.m.-noon at the Rowan Museum, 202 N. Main St.

Afterward, the 28th NCT will sponsor for the general public beginning at 1 p.m. The Civil War seminar “Beyond the Battlefield.”

The seminars for 2017 will include a presentation focusing upon The Recruitment of Foreigners by the Confederacy at the Salisbury Prison. A great deal has been written surrounding the recruitment of Confederate POWs into the federal army during the War Between the States. However, far less information is available on the recruitment of federal POWs into the Confederate army. This seminar will explore the subject of galvanizing the federal Irish POWs into Confederate service who were held at the Salisbury Prison. Emphasis is given to recently discovered historical documents and information on recruitment activities at the Salisbury Prison and the battles in which these Irish recruits fought for the South.

An additional presentation will follow on Confederate Black Powder Pistols. Various models carried by officers will be discussed along with the display of an extensive private collection. There is no fee for attending. Stanton to speak at Alzheimer’s meeting

Louanne Stanton will speak Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Alzheimer’s Support Group meeting at Trinity Oaks. Stanton will talk about grieving the death of a relationship, the effects of Alzheimer’s, and how families can deal with the guilt and pain that often accompanies a loved one entering a nursing home. The meeting, which includes a light meal, begins at 5:30 p.m. in the special events room at The Lodge at Trinity Oaks.  11th Annual Lupus Mardi Gras Gala

CHARLOTTE — The 11th Annual Lupus Mardi Gras Gala is March 4 from 7 p.m.-midnight at Founders Hall, Bank of America Corporate Center located at 100 N. Tryon St. and will benefit the Lupus Foundation of America, NC Chapter (LFANC). The event will feature entertainment by Hot Sauce, Creole cuisine, a silent auction, photo booth, fortune teller, Mardi Gras masquerade contest, luxury raffle, and crowning of the Gala King and Queen. Tickets are $150 each if purchased by Feb. 3, then $175 through Feb. 24.
