Prep football

RALEIGH — After a state-title run, Greensboro Dudley headlined the 2016 Associated Press all-state prep football team for North Carolina.

Dudley had four players selected to the 29-player squad: quarterback Hendon Hooker, offensive linemen Bryson Speas and Dacquari Wilson, and defensive lineman Awstyn Williams. That was the most of any school after voting by 23 sports writers at newspapers across the state, with results released Thursday.

Dudley (15-1) won a Class 4-A championship last month with a 54-0 win against then-unbeaten Cape Fear.

Three schools — 2-AA champion Shelby, 4-AA champion Wake Forest and Charlotte Mallard Creek — had two all-state players each.

Shelby receiver Jayden Borders, Lincolnton receiver Sage Surratt and Wake Forest linebacker Darius Hodge each earned 21 votes to lead the balloting.

It was the second straight all-state selection for Borders and Surratt in a particularly strong year at the position. Borders had 81 catches for 1,726 yards and 22 touchdowns to help Shelby win a fourth straight state title, while Surratt had state-records of 129 catches and 2,104 yards to go with 28 TD catches.

The other players to repeat as all-state picks from 2015 were: Mallard Creek offensive lineman Eric Douglas, Shelby linebacker Dax Hollifield and Mt. Holly Mountain Island Charter defensive back Aapri Washington — who was previously chosen at athlete.

On offense, Greenville Conley’s Holton Ahlers tied Hooker for the quarterback spot with 10 votes. Running backs Zamir White of Scotland County and E.J. Harris of Greenville Rose joined them in the backfield.

Davidson Day’s Nolan Groulx and Clayton Cleveland’s Jacob Scott each earned six votes to tie for the final receiver spot behind Borders and Surratt, while Charlotte Vance’s Jeremiah Hall was voted in at tight end.

Waxhaw Marvin Ridge’s D’mitri Emmanuel and Mallard Creek’s T.J. Moore joined Speas, Douglas and Wilson on the offensive line.

Maiden dual-threat quarterback Caleb Farley was picked at athlete, designed to honor versatile players.
