Area Sports Briefs: North Rowan girls get first victory

North Rowan’s girls basketball team won at North Stanly, 45-36, on Tuesday in a non-conference game.

It was the first victory of the season for the Cavaliers (1-10) and coach Ron Bost.

Brianna White scored 17 to pace the Cavaliers, while Bea Connor had 16.

The Cavaliers built a large lead and were able to hold on.

The Comets fell to 3-6.

North Davidson won against Davie County, 64-50,  on Tuesday in Central Piedmont Conference action.

Trinity Hayes scored 12 to lead the Davie girls (2-10, 0-4 CPC). Maddie Bohannon scored 10.

North Davidson is 8-5 and 2-1 in the CPC.

West Rowan hosts Robinson in SPC action tonight.

In the NCPreps state rankings, Salisbury is fifth in 2A.

Hickory Ridge is first in 3A, while Central Cabarrus is 10th.

Boys basketball

North Stanly won against North Rowan, 63-62, in non-conference action in Misenheimer on Tuesday.

Cameron Lee scored 24 points for the Comets (4-7).  Bryson Childress scored 15 points, while Paul  Childress had 13.

Joe Scott scored 16 to lead North Rowan (5-7). Alonzo Sirleaf scored 11, and Henderson Lentz added 10.

Sophomore Carson Lowder made the game-winning shot with Bryson Childress making the assist.

Lentz put North Rowan ahead with two free throws before Lowder’s bucket beat  the buzzer.

North Rowan’s Dayjuwon Cooke was called for a technical foul on a rebound dunk late in the contest, and the game began with a scorebook technical on the Cavaliers.

Davie County lost to North Davidson, 71-70, in overtime on Tuesday in Mocksville.

Heath Slabach hit two free throws with less than a second left to force overtime in the CPC contest.

Michael Walton’s shot at the buzzer  in OT hit the rim twice but wouldn’t fall.

Owen McCormack led the War Eagles with 17 points. Slabach scored 15, and Walton had 14.

Cooper Wall left the game with an injury (knee)  in the third quarter.

West Rowan hosts Robinson and Lavar Batts Jr. tonight. Batts, headed to Virginia Commonwealth, is ranked as the state’s top senior.

In the NCPreps state rankings for 3A,   SPC teams are 2-3-4. Cox Mill is second, Robinson third, and Hickory Ridge fourth.

Men’s basketball

Catawba hosts third-ranked and undefeated Queens tonight at Goodman Gym at 8 p.m.

Pfeiffer made 19 3-pointers and shelled Erskine 104-74 on Tuesday at  Merner Gym.

Pfeiffer has topped 100 points six times in its last seven games.

Pfeiffer (9-1, 3-1 Conference Carolinas) got 20 points from Andrew Guerrero and 17 each from A.K. Clark, Mike Smith and Josh Calhoun.

Sae’Quahn Rogers pulled down 15 rebounds. Pfeiffer enjoyed a 61-38 edge on the boards.

Guerrero surpassed 1,000 points for his career and is the 34th Falcon to reach that milestone.

Brannon Dark scored 18 for the Flying Fleet  (5-8, 1-4 CC).

ORLANDO, Fla.  — B.J. Taylor had 19 points, Chad Brown added 11 in as many minutes and UCF beat East Carolina 48-45 on Tuesday night.

East Carolina (9-7, 1-2), which hit just 6 of 16 foul shots, shot 26.7 percent from the field and was outrebounded 46-38. Kentrell Barkley scored 16, including a career-high four 3s, and grabbed nine rebounds for the Pirates.

Women’s basketball

Pfeiffer’s women had a rough shooting night — 29.4 percent from the field and 13-for-31 on free throws — and lost to Erskine, 76-63, on Tuesday at Merner Gym.

Sydni Bickford and Meg Pritchard led the Falcons (3-5, 1-3 CC) with 18 points each.

Longwood’s Khaila Hall (West Rowan) had seven points, four assists and two blocks in a 65-55 loss to  Presbyterian on Tuesday.

Prep baseball

North Rowan senior Joe Harrison has committed to  Belmont Abbey’s baseball program.

The lefty had a 5-0 record for the Cavaliers as a junior, working mostly out of the bullpen.

Parks and Rec

  The Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department is holding registration for its coed basketball (ages 5-6) and girls basketball (ages 7-15) leagues.

Catawba camp

The Catawba softball team will be holding an advanced skills camp on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan.  16.

The camp will be held at Whitley Field on the Catawba campus from 12:30-4:30 p.m. The cost of the camp is $100. Each participant is asked to bring cleats as well as turf shoes. An alternate site will be used in case of inclement weather.

Elks Hoop Shoot

The Salisbury Elks Lodge No. 699 and Salisbury Parks and Recreation will host the annual Hoop Shoot Free Throw contest on Sunday, Jan.  15, starting at 3 p.m. at Hall Gym.  The event is free and open to boys and girls, ages 8-13.   

Participants should register in advance.  Adult volunteers are also needed.

Winners in each of the six divisions will be awarded trophies and advance to the district competition on Saturday, Jan.  28, in Winston Salem.

In addition to the district level, there are state and regional competitions leading to the National Hoop Shoot Championships in Chicago in April.

Motorsports

Salisbury’s Justin Jacobsen  has graduated from Performance Instruction & Training’s   Pit Crew U. training program.

PIT is a  licensed pit crew training school in Mooresville.

Pit Crew U is conducted on Mondays and Wednesdays for eight weeks.

Jacobsen now will be  joining PIT’s 5 Off 5 On Race Team Performance program.  He hopes to follow his brother, Bryan Jacobsen, who  works as a tire changer at Stewart-Haas Racing.
