Area Sports Briefs: Moir tournament starts today

The Dale’s Sporting Goods Sam Moir  Christmas Classic starts today at Catawba.

The three-day event includes eight games daily. Adult tournament passes are $20.  Daily admission charge is $8.

Cost per day for ages 5-17 is $5.

The Davie, Carson, Salisbury and South Rowan girls and boys teams play back-to-back today.

Prep hooops

Jael Miller scored 16 points to lead the Central Cabarrus girls to a 64-38 win against Lake Norman Charter in Tuesday’s first round of the East Lincoln Winter Jam.

In the Bank of N.C. Classic at Ledford, Scott Hughes scored 18 points to lead West Davidson to a 52-49 win against East Davidson in a boys semifinal.

West Davidson plays Thomasville for the championship tonight.

In the John Wall Invitational being played in Raleigh and Cary, Wendell Moore had 28 points and 16 rebound to lead Cox Mill’s  boys past Broughton, 68-51.

Catawba baseball

Catawba baseball will host its second annual First Pitch Dinner on Saturday, Jan. 14,  n the Gordon A. Kirkland Lobby  in the Abernathy Physical Education Center on the Catawba campus.

Catawba welcomes guest speaker Bob Ryan and special guest Darryl Strawberry.

Ryan  earned the NSSA National Sportwriter of the Year four times.

Strawberry was a nine-time MLB All-Star and  the 1984 NL Rookie of the Year with the New York Mets.

Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) made four tackles for Pittsburgh in Sunday’s 31-27 win against the Baltimore Ravens.

College football

Former Catawba cornerback Case Woodard is on the roster for the Tropical Bowl in Daytona, Fla., on Jan. 15. That’s a major all-star game that is mostly  a showcase for Division I NFL draft prospects.

Appalachian State’s  Marcus Cox  accepted  an invitation for the East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 21  in St. Petersburg, Fla.

NCPreps placed North Rowan (9th), West Rowan (13th) and Davie County (11th) in the final  state rankings by  classification.

College basketball

Matt Morgan (Cox Mill) scored 10 points for Cornell in Tuesday’s 80-56 loss to Syracuse.
