Area Sports Briefs: Catawba women lose exhibition at UNC Wilmington

The Catawba women’s basketball team closed its pre-Christmas schedule with a 91-65 exhibition loss at UNC Wilmington on Monday night at Trask Coliseum.
Bri Johnson had another outstanding effort for Catawba as she scored a game-high 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting. She went 6-of-9 from behind the arc.
Serena Brown had 12 points and nine assists. Marshauna Butler scored 10 points.
Madison Raque canned eight three-pointers and scored 28 points to lead UNC Wilmington (5-5). Diamond Willis collected 18 points and nine rebounds, while Timber Tate tallied 11 points.
Catawba trailed 42-38 at the break. Johnson had 17 of her points in the first half, with Brown adding 10.
The teams were tied late in the third quarter, but the Seahawks had a 23-0 run and pulled away in the final six minutes.
Catawba returns to action on New Year’s Eve, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m.

Men’s basketball
Malik Ford (North Rowan) had six points, six rebounds and two blocks for J.C. Smith in Monday’s 61-59 loss to Bowie State.

Deshawn Troutman (Salisbury) had 22 points for Barber-Scotia in a recent 85-79 win against Georgia Southwestern.

Newberry’s D.J. Copeland (A.L. Brown) scored 10 points in Saturday’s 107-102 win vs. Lincoln Memorial.

Prep basketball
Wendell Moore had 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead Cox Mill to a 71-58 win against Hickory Ridge in SPC hoops on Monday.
It was the first league loss for Hickory Ridge. West Rowan is the last undefeated team in league play and goes to Cox Mill tonight.

Gabby Smith scored 20 points to lead the undefeated Hickory Ridge girls to an easy 61-26 win against Cox Mill.
Hickory Ridge hosts Carson in a big girls game tonight.

Monday’s Salisbury-A.L. Brown varsity action was postponed by a power failure. The schools will try to reschedule.

Pro basketball
K.J. Sherrill (West Rowan) is averaging 12.6 points for his team in Germany. Sherrill had 19 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday.

College baseball
Catawba announced the signings of North Davidson outfielder Joe Butts and Central Davidson right-handed pitcher Greg Brown.

In the NC Runner Holiday Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Rowan senior Payton Russell competed with her AAU team and placed sixth in the 300 meters (41.49) and eighth in the 500 meters (1:20.89).
A.L. Brown’s Cambrea Sturgis is one of Russell’s teammates. Sturgis took fourth in the 300 (40.90).
West Rowan’s Cameron Butler was third in the 1000 meters in 2:39.57, while West’s Jalen Houston was fifth in the 55 hurdles in 7.93 seconds.
