SALISBURY — George and Blanche usually have dinner with a group of friends at least weekly or monthly.

The group of friends — John and Peggy, Harry and Pat, Mike and Ebbie, and Hoyt and Gwen — have been going to dinner together with George and Blanche for several years.

George and Blanche gave a donation to the Christmas Happiness Fund program in honor of their “dinner friends.”

“We want to help out what the fund goes for — the children,” George said.

He encourages others who have the ability to give to contribute, saying “I think it’s a good thing for them to do.”

The couple moved to Rowan County from Alabama, but George is native of Rutherford County.

He went into the Air Force and eventually lived in Florida and then later Alabama.

The couple have been married for 59 years.

The Christmas Happiness Fund is a Salisbury Post-sponsored program that gives those in the community the opportunity to give contributions to area families. The eligible families are given vouchers that can be used to buy clothing or toys for their children.

Each donation is noted in a Post article in memory or in honor of someone.

Rick and Lisa Painter also gave to the Christmas Happiness Fund in honor of friends.

The couple, who live in the Gables at Kepley Farm community, play cards at least once a month with their neighbors in the close-knit community.

The Painters have lived in the Gables for 10 years. They moved in a year after the development was started, welcoming its first families.

Rick and Lisa have been giving to the Christmas Happiness Fund for a number of years. Rick said they simply give to help those in need.

Bring contributions to the Salisbury Post, 131 W. Innes St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or mail them to The Salisbury Post Christmas Happiness Fund, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, NC 28145-4639.

Make checks payable to the Christmas Happiness Fund and indicate how you wish your donations to be listed.
