Area Sports Briefs: Mars Hill freshman Farmer off to fast start

Mars Hill freshman Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) is tied for the South Atlantic Conference lead in rebounding with 13 per game.
In her first four basketball games for the Lions, Farmer has three double-digit rebounding efforts, including a career-high of 17.
Farmer is averaging 9.8 points per game.

Kennesaw State’s Kelly Dulkoski (Carson) scored 12 points in a loss to Georgia Tech.

Amani Ajayi (East Rowan) scored six points for Averett in a 64-63 loss to Virginia Wesleyan.

Khaila Hall (West Rowan) scored six points for Longwood in a win against Massachusetts-Lowell.

Amy Steller (Davie) scored 10 points for Guilford in a win against MacMurray.

Alison Sobataka (West Rowan) scored eight points for Columbia in a loss to Truett McConnell.
Men’s basketball
D.J. Copeland (A.L. Brown) scored 22 points and had six assists and six rebounds for Newberry in Saturday’s 124-100 win against Southern Wesleyan.
Newberry plays at Queens Tuesday.
Carlos Dixon (South Rowan) is in his first year as an assistant coach at Queens after a long pro career overseas.

Augusta’s Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) scored 20 points in a loss to West Georgia.
College football
Western Michigan’s Keion Adams (Salisbury) made six tackles, three for loss, in Saturday’s win against Buffalo.
Adams also was credited with a forced fumble.

True freshman Jayln Cagle (A.L. Brown) scored his first college touchdown on Saturday for Gardner-Webb.
Cagle scored on a 5-yard run in overtime in a 34-33 win against Monmouth. He had 10 carries for 49 yards.

Charlotte senior Kalif Phillips (A.L. Brown) had 14 carries for 67 yards in Saturday’s loss to Middle Tennessee.
Phillips has 895 rushing yards this season and surpassed 4,000 for his career.
College volleyball
Wingate won the SAC tournament for the 10th time in 11 years by beating Lincoln Memorial.

College men’s soccer
Wingate (17-1) got a second-half goal from All-American Jon Ander on Sunday afternoon, and won 1-0 against Tampa to win the Southeast Region championship.
