The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag warning for wind and low relative humidity for Rowan County until 8 p.m. today.

This results in increased fire danger from this evening through Sunday evening.

Wind gusts will increase this afternoon and humidity will fall throughout the day, with winds from the northwest at 10-20 mph, and gusts up to 30 mph.

Humidity could drop to 25 percent.

The combination of gusty winds, low humidity and extremely dry vegetation brought on by the drought will result in extremely dangerous conditions for the rapid spread and growth of wildfire. Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages could result.

A Red Flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

A wind advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. The advisory means that winds of 35 mph are expected; gusts possible to 40 mph. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

Any burning is highly discouraged.
