Rockwell High School Class of 1950

Rockwell High School Class of 1950 held its 66^th class reunion on September 23, 2016 at Blue Bay Seafood Restaurant in Salisbury with 17 class members and 11 guests present. President Norman File welcomed everyone and remembered those we have lost since the last reunion: James Mahaley, Guy Bost, Zanie Waller Bost, and Ralph Holmes. Norman and others shared information about class members who were sick and unable to attend. He welcomed our special teacher Mrs. Jean McCombs.

After Norman gave the invocation, everyone enjoyed a wonderful meal and spent time sharing memories of days gone by. Those attending included Peggy Troutman, Gail Troutman, Frances Hand, Virginia Alexander, Margaret Gentry, Angelo Wagoner, Betty Morgan, Martha Arey, Lonzo Arey, Peggy Daniel, Betty Rose Setzer, Jake Setzer, Jenetter Driggers, Maria Shue, Bill Lyerly, Beth Lyerly, Lee Beaver, Sue Beaver, Norman File, Eula Artz, Eva Artz Millsapa, Harold Earnhardt, Martha Salerno, Frances Holshouser, Phil Holshouser, Sherri Wolfe, Jim Wagoner, and teacher Mrs. Jean McCombs.

The class of ’50 plans to meet again next year to reconnect with former classmates and friends and family members. The planning committee included Norman File, Betty Rose Setzer, Martha Arey and Betty Morgan.

 

Rockwell High School Class of 1945

The 1945 graduates of Rockwell High School celebrated their 71^st class reunion on October 21, 2016 at the Blue Bay Seafood restaurant in Salisbury, NC. John Yelton welcomed everyone and gave the invocation before lunch. All enjoyed visiting and recalling past memories and events. Cards were signed by all to be sent to classmates unable to attend. Thirteen students and ten guests were present.

Students attending  were  Jennie Barrier, Betty Buckwell, Mary Deal, Glenn Ray Holshouser, Thelma Odom, Gertrude Sigmon, Jake Setzer, Brownie Stirewalt, Ruth Wagoner, Betty Williams, Betty Wyatt, John Yelton and Joe Ketner.

Guests attending were Rose Holshouser, Charlie Odom, Betty Setzer,  Jay Wagoner, Patsy Yelton,  Mary Ketner, Amber Bowles, Susan Giessler,  Ann Miller (Mascot) and Clarence Miller.

 

East Rowan High School Class of 1966 – 50 Year Reunion

The East Rowan High School Class of 1966 celebrated its 50 year reunion with a social hour and dinner buffet at the Salisbury Country Club on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016.

L.A. Earnhardt served as Master of Ceremonies. Approximately 64 classmates and 50 guests with a total of 114 attended. The event included two former teachers as special guests, Jean McCombs and Myrtle Lentz.

The invocation was given by Rev. Kerry Steedley. Rev. Steedley led the memorial time with a moment of silence and explained that all donations to the Memorial fund totaling $1,200 would go to the East Rowan Bible Class in support of the Bible History Course.

L.A Earnhardt, Bill Fortune, Darlene Ketchie Smith and Brenda Cauble awarded door prizes with classmates and guests receiving the prizes. Sue Fortune Dockery was recognized for traveling the farthest from Florida. Susan Hartman Loflin was recognized for being married the longest (50 years). Following the prizes everyone enjoyed socializing with one another. A display table featured memorabilia from our senior year.

The Opioid Epidemic in Our Community

Rowan County Chapter of The Autism Society of NC

This monthly meeting (every third Tuesday) will soon become the Rowan County Chapter of The Autism Society of NC.

The November support meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 6:30-8 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, room 108, 217 S. Church St. Enter on the Church Street side of building through doors to the right of the courtyard.

“Transition to Adulthood: Where To Begin.” Presenter: Sarah Smead, Autism Specialist with Charlotte TEACCH Center. Learn more about the considerations parents should be making for transition both at school and at home. Sarah will also talk about TEACCH and how their services can help during the transition phase of life with a child with autism.

Rockwell Lions host the Vision Van

ROCKWELL — The Lions Mobile Screening unit will be parked at Johnny’s Restaurant, US 52 Main Street, on Nov. 19 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for free hearing and vision screenings for children and adults. Children age 6 and up are welcome to be screened; those under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

The Rockwell Lions have been meeting for 62 years. Currently they gather on the first and third Tuesdays in the basement conference room of the east branch of Rowan Public Library in Rockwell at 6:30 p.m. (7 p.m. in the summer). PHOENIX READERS’ CHRISTMAS SPECIAL 2016

The Christmas season is a time of reflection, anticipation, and joy.  “Under the Mistletoe,” a gent recalls a rebuffed kiss under that sprig of green and red.  Nothing says anticipation quite like “Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town” or Isaiah 9: 2-6.  The 15th century English hymn, “What Child Is This?” tells of the joy of recognizing the newborn King.

Christmas calls for laughter too!  Chuckle at “The Computer’s First Christmas Card.” Program includes highlights from last year’s  Christmas program, plus new selections including “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer.”

The Phoenix Readers, directed by Jim Epperson, is available to perform this 40-minute program, after Thanksgiving.  There is no charge for the program although a donation to the Center for Faith & the Arts is welcome.
