FirstArts hosts concert with New York artists

Two renowned New York artists are coming to Salisbury on Friday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 217 South Church St.

This free concert is not sacred music and will feature Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs, among other works by American composers.

Soprano Tami Petty made her Merkin Hall début in 2014 and has performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and Avery Fisher Hall. Hailed by The New York Times as a “powerful soprano,” she has performed with numerous orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and American Symphony Orchestra.

Thomas Bagwell is an assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and has accompanied many of the world’s finest singers, including Renée Fleming, Marilyn Horne, Denyce Graves, and Frederica von Stade. His appearances as a collaborative pianist have taken him to such noted venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein, the Concertgebouw, and numerous halls across the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Japan.

Price of Freedom Museum commemorates Veterans Day

CHINA GROVE — From 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, the Price of Freedom Museum, 2420 Weaver Road, will commemorate Veterans Day with the theme of “Pearl Harbor memories.”

There will be military vehicles on display, weapons and war related memorabilia plus a military flag raising ceremony.

Dr. Rob Havers speaks on ‘Men Of Three Centuries’

The English Speaking Union Salisbury Branch presents Dr. Rob Havers, speaking on the similarities between General George Marshall and Winston Churchill.

Dr. Havers has been president of the George C. Marshall Foundation since 2014 after serving as executive director of The National Churchill Museum and vice president for the Churchill Institute at Westminster College, Fulton, Mo.

Scholar, author and public speaker, Dr. Havers graduated from Queen Mary College, Univ. of London with a bachelor’s degree in history and politics; London School of Economics and Political Science with a master’s degree in later modern British history and Pembroke College of Univ. of Cambridge with a PhD.

Lee Street theatre seeks dancers

Lee Street theatre announces dance auditions for “Viva Las Vegas: Musical Revue” on Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. at Lee Street theatre, 329 N. Lee St.

Four female dancers will join Salisbury’s favorite singers for this Vegas-themed event. The audition will consist of learning and performing two combinations and basic movement with stylized choreography as well as the opportunity to show any special talents or skills.

Kayla Guffey, third-year Catawba College musical theatre student, choreographs with guidance from assistant professor Meredith Fox. She attended the Triple Threat School of Dance in Winston- Salem for five years prior to her musical theatre studies at Catawba College.

Performance dates are Jan. 19-22 and 26-28. Rehearsals will begin in December.

Begin the Christmas season with Catawba’s Service of Lessons & Carols

Members of the general public are invited to begin their Christmas season by attending Catawba College’s 29th annual Service of Lessons and Carols — held in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel — on two evenings: Monday, Nov. 28 and Thursday, Dec. 1.

The Service of Lessons and Carols is based on the historic ritual that originated at King’s College in Cambridge, England. It weaves carols of the season with scriptures or lessons relating to the story of Christmas from the prophecies to the mystery of the Holy Trinity.

Prelude music from the Catawba Chamber Brass will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The service will include choral selections from the Catawba Singers, the Chamber Singers, PopAC, and Men’s and Women’s Ensembles. The congregation will join in the singing of traditional hymns and seasonal carols and Handel’s “Messiah” will be featured.

Shuttle service to the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel will be offered to and from the Robertson College-Community Center and Shuford Stadium parking lots on campus.

Tickets for both services are free, but required. No more than four tickets per individual. Tickets can be reserved through the Catawba College Development Office at 704-637-4396.
