Salisbury golfer Frank Adams III shot 14-under-par 274 (68-70-68-68) and tied for seventh in a field of 78 in the second stage of Web.com Qualifying School at Magnolia Grove’s Crossings Course in Mobile, Ala.
The top 19 advanced to the final stage at Orange County National in Winter Garden, Fla., Dec. 8-11.
Adams had 20 birdies, 47 pars, four bogeys and a double bogey.
He made four straight birdies on the front nine in hisfinal round, shooting a 4-under 32 on the front side.
He played bogey-free golf in the first and third rounds and had one bogey in the final round.

8th-grade hoops
Erwin’s girls won against Corriher-Lipe, 49-10.
Colbie Perry scored 19 points. Jenna Robinson scored 10, Lani Isley eight, and Carleigh Perry six.

Erwin’s boys defeated Corriher Lipe, 36-18.
Gavin Sprinkle scored 10 points for the Eagles, with David Jordan getting nine.
Tahj Young was a standout offensively and defensively. Thomas Miller, Isaac Hinceman, Sammy Pinckney and Ryan Lee also scored for the Eagles.
Next for Erwin is Thursday’s matchup at West Rowan. The boys will play the first game at 4 p.m.

Leading scorers for the Mavericks were Zay Davis with 23 points, and Kendrelll Goodes with 10.
Jaharion Graham scored eight, while Nick Colson added five.

Appalachian State used a late run to fend off a pesky Lenoir-Rhyne squad, 56-40, Wednesday evening in the Holmes Center.
Freshman Bayley Plummer (East Davidson) had 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Sam Moir Christmas Classic at Catawba will be played on Dec. 28-30.

Prep football
Concord High’s Hamsah Nasirildeen has been chosen for the prestigious Army All-American game to be played in San Antonio.
U.S. Army representatives will visit Concord on Wednesday, and Nasirildeen will be honored as an All-American.

Second-round games are set for tonight, including Salisbury at Franklin in 2A and A.L. Brown at South Meck in 4A.

College soccer
The Division II men’s soccer tournament bracket was announced Monday, and defending champ Pfeiffer is seeded second in the Southeast Region.
The Falcons are looking to become the first team since 2000 to repeat as national champions.
Pfeiffer has won 12 straight and is the nation’s highest-scoring team.
Pfeiffer will host games on Thursday and Saturday at Lefko Field. Pfeiffer will play on Saturday at 7 p.m. against the winner of Thursday’s Tusculum-Lenoir-Rhyne matchup.
Wingate earned the top seed in the Southeast region. The rest of the region includes No. 4 Limestone and No. 5 Lander.
Wingate is outscoring the opposition, 39-8, on the season. Wingate ranks fourth nationally in goals-against average.
The Final Four is slated for Dec. 1 in Kansas City, Mo., with the national championship game being held Dec. 3.

The SAC placed a pair of women’s soccer teams in the Southeast Regional.
Lenoir-Rhyne earned an at-large bid and will be the No. 5 seed in the Southeast Region, while Carson-Newman took the League’s automatic bid and is the No. 6 seed in the region. Both Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman will play on Nov. 11.

College football
After an open week, UNC Pembroke stayed put at No. 16 in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25, but fell two spots to No. 4 in the NCAA Super Region 2 poll.
The Braves (8-1) remain one of five NCAA Super Region 2 teams included in the AFCA Top 25, joining No. 7 North Alabama (7-1), No. 14 Tuskegee (8-1), No. 19 Newberry (9-1) and No. 23 Valdosta State (7-2).
North Alabama is atop the NCAA Super Region 2 rankings for the third straight week after registering a 51-3 win over West Florida at home. Newberry used a 49-7 thumping of Limestone to jump up into the No. 2 position, while Valdosta State took over the No. 3 spot thanks to a 37-22 victory over Gulf South Conference rival West Alabama.
Seven teams from each “super region” advance to the 28-team NCAA Division II Championship playoff. The annual tournament will begin on campus sites November 19.

While the nation counts ballots, No. 14 Western Michigan might be able to influence some voters Tuesday night.
One of five unbeaten teams in the Top 25 , the Broncos (9-0) jumped three spots in the poll this week and have risen steadily despite minimal national attention.
They will get a chance to showcase what they’re all about on election night in a televised game against Kent State (3-6), which has played better than its record.
